DIED TODAY
This morning at o'clock William
Hackc';t died at th home of his
daughter. Mrs. ' Fro-l Bwaney. Mr.
Hackett had been in 111 health (or a
number of months, and while his
death was a great shock to the rela
tives and friends. It was not alto
gether unexpected. Mr. Hacket was
73 years of age, and had been a resi
dent of La Grande, for the past eight
years. He was born In Staffordshire,
England, but came to the United
States when but 9 years of age. ; He
was a! man of strong character, one
of those men who commanded the re-'
spect and love of all with whom he
came In personal contact. , Especially
were the children and young , men
drawn to him from the fact that he
was always ready and willing to assist
or advise. To the older people he was
what might be trmed reticent, but at
the same time was always ready tc
take a decided stand for what he con
sidered right and proper. He was a
man whose friendship was an honor;
whose companionship a true pelasure.
He leaves two- daughters and a son,
his wife having preceded him to the
other life two years ago last Thanks
giving day. The children are:
Mrs. Fred Swaney of this cltyi Mrs.
J. A. Jackson of Council Bluffs, Jowa,
and H. B. Hackett, now residing
In Oklahoma. Both have been noti
fied of their father's death. Mr
Jackson will come to La Grande, but
It Is not known at this time If the son
can come. Funeral arrangements
cannot be made until Mrs. Jackson ar
rives. The deceased was an active
member of the Episcopal church, and
also a member of the Masnn'e lodge.
