Inspector Wed worth, paid and em ployed by the New York Air Brake company, has spent a day Jn La Grande Inspecting the brakes and went away today highly pleased with con ditions here. Nowhere in the west, perhaps, is there need of closer attention to the condition of air "brakes than in east ern Oregon, and Mr. Watson is to be commended on his record. Air brakes save more lives In this section of Ore gon than anywhere else, and were lo cal officials and Inspectors not so at tentive to their duties, many disas trous wrecks would result. fir r?vrvr',Tm i nrniiT.nr Iclr in et Theth vuhtn Vnn mme in ihr j itu ' w w w m it wiir mi vii m viii v aw a I fie reope f i V m V I I8 X f I atTV in; " ais iicu v.ii i i La Grande's Leading Dry Goods Emporium fDpD, and The Temole of Economy ::::::: wl 1-Ifi SHIES OF m a The lntermlltunt showers of the past . With Okla homa now quite at home In the family of states and New Mexico and Arizona knocking for admission. It would ap pear that the limit of the number of commonwealths In the Union would loon be reached. Already, however, there Is much discussion among con gressmen of making news states out of old ones and some of the projects are being taken seriously. For years. t occasional Intervals, It Has been proposed that the unwieldy bulk of Texas should be divided Into at lean two, and possibly four states. This vropoaltlon has never met with the favor of the republican leaders In congress, owing to political reasons, 'nd It Is more than likely that the Lone Ptar state -Will maintain its In tegrity for many years to come. Less opposition has been provoked by the proposal to form a new state of what la known as the "Inland em pire," comprising portions of the states of Washington, Idaho and Oregon. with Spokane as the capital. It has been suggested that the new common wealth thus organized be chr!st"ned Lincoln, thus bringing sentimental as well as commercial reason to the sup port of the scheme. It Is urged that the Interests of the "inland empire" are directly opposed to the balance of the states of which It forms a part and that the formation of the new state, would be of direct advantage to all concerned. Another project which has come to the front In the last few weeks Is the forming of a new state of the northern parts of Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, with Duluth as the proba ble capital. This section forms the mineral c'lstrlcts of the three states, bordering on the lakes, with interests entirely different from the agricul tural sections. In order to bring about the forma tion of such new states, there would have to be favorable action by tho legislatures of all the states affected and by the congress of the United States. It would be a slow and diffi cult process, and It Is unlikely that the number of states will be Increased by this method for many years to come. The Last ri-nncc.
