WITH SAND AND GRAVEL AND IS DEVOID OF VEGETATION WITH
THE EXCEPTION OF SAGEBRUSH.
THE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS FIELD SHOW IT TO
BE OF THE NATURE OF A DRY, BARREN PLAIN OR BASIN, THE
SUB-DIVISIONS REFERRED TO CONSISTING OF SILICIFIED AND
CLAY SHALES, SANDSTONE, CLOSE AND COARSE GRAINED.
THE UNDERLYING FORMATIONS ARE CLAY. SANDSTONE AND
CALCAREOUS CONCRETIONS, WHITE CALCAREOUS SHELLS. FOSSIL
IFEROUS CONCRETIONS, CARBONIFEROUS LIME AND LIME SHALES.
THE FORMATION GENERALLY IS SUCH AS TO GIVE THE LANDS IN
QUESTION A HIGH CHARACTER AS LANDS PECULIAR TO OIL FOR
MATIONS ON THE PACIFIC COAST.
THE SANDSTONE STRATA IS IMPREGNATED AND STAINED
WITH DEPOSITS WHICH WOULD RESULT FROM SUCH SOURCE.

STATEMENT WAS MADE TO THE EFFECT THAT THE MALHEUR CO

of the finest grazing land In this dis
trict. The parties taking the least on the
land are A. K. and A. Smythe of Ar
lington, Dan P. Smythe, secretary of
the Oregon Woolgrowers' association,
of Pendleton; William Smith of Ar
lington, and A. M. Whlttler of Hunt
ington. The parties owning and con
trolling the land are the Oregon Lum
ber1 company, Hewitt-Bell Lumber
company, Stoddard Bros. Lumber
company, Sumpter Lumber company.

by W. C. Calder. .The lease Is for a
term of Ave years and the considera
tion Is close to ISOOO.
The object of the sheepmen in tak
ing this range Is to secure plenty of
gracing land for their herds. A meet
ing was held in this city Wednesday
with the cattlemen, so that there will
be no trouble about the boundaries.
In the past cattle and sheep have been
running promiscuously over the range
but under the new regime each man
will keep on his own ground. This
will ''afford the sheepmen an oppor
tunity for increasing their bands by
several thousand head.
