FLEET WEEK
Buck from San Francisco, where he
and his wife witnessed the treat of a
life time seeing entrance through the
Golden Gate and the subsequent man
euvers of the combined Pacific and
Atlantic fleets In the 'Frisco harbor,
Trainmaster J. D. Mntheson Is today
telling other railroad employes who
were not so fortunate as to be able to
witness the sight, something ot the
splendor of the event! Mr. 'and Mrs.
Matheson were on Goat Island when
the Atlantic fleet passed through the
Golden Gate in single file. They were
within 800 yards of the monster ves
sels and naturally got a splendid view
of the sea pageant. After enterlng'the
harbor proper, the fleet did a maneu
ver which In militia terms would be
"front Into line of squads." Majesti
cally and slowly the vessels turned to
face the city of San Francisco In such
a way that the bows of each of the
four leaders would form an oblique
line. The remaining 12 of the At
Inntlc fleet assumed the four oblique
group position before they came to
anchor. . The Pacific fleet and the
auxiliaries of the Atlantic fleet all
fell in line as established by the father
of all fleets, and when the maneuvers
were over, there were 46 ships In the
formation. .......
The view at night was no less spec.
tacular. Along the water line of each
vessel, along each deck line, on every
cross-arm, funnel and mast were
myriads, of lights that could be seen
for miles and the outline of each ship
of the monster fleet was as clearly vis
ible as though It were day. Mr. Math
eson a a etwh :
eson saw the fleet in passing at Santa
Barbara.
Saw the Old Se Dog.
In San Francisco the Matheson par
ty were within 10 feet of Admiral
Robley D. Evans, and had emple op
portunity to hear the old sea dog con
verse. The parade on land the day follow
ing was a sight worthy to behold.
Thousands of men marched In the
line and presented a spectacle seldom
seen.
Because third Baseman Van Horst
was spiked and taken out of the game
In the, first Inning, La Grande took
a balloon ascension on the Pendleton
ball park yesterday afternoon in the
first of a series of two games with the
Pendleton Pets, and before they land
ed again, Pendleton had scored seven
runs. The first Inning put a quietus
on the game and from then on it was
Pendleton's game. Eighteen to 2 was
the sad story at the end of the con
flict The rumor of rank manipula
tion of the Indicator which reached
La Grande last night, was corroborat
ed today by additional reports.
Fuchell, the southpaw who twirled
for La Grande, was extremely wild,
however, and his throwing was bad.
This, augmented by tho monstrosity
behind the pitcher, served to wallop
the visiting team. Another game is
being played this afternoon. The re
sults will again be posted on The Ob
server score boards.
