outsider of Portland, and during the
present season Portland Is doing more
paving than at any time in 1 her his

The Coos Bay Harbor has just Issued
a Woman's edition under the auspices
of the Beautiful American club. The
best known women of the state, have
contributed to the Issue and It Is a suc
cess from every standpoint
The members of the' Portland Real
ty board enjoyed. In addition to a boat
ride on the Incomparable Columbia, a
full day's outing at Hood River, last
Saturday, where they were entertained
In the most gracious way.
A vast area of Klamath, Harney,
Lake and Malheur counties, compris
ing some 300,000 acres. Is to be open
ed for settlement. Much capital Is
behind the enterprise and this pro
ject must of necessity attract enor
mous attention to that great portion
of Oregon, which only needs Improved
transportation facilities to make it oae
of the most productive and popular
sections of the northwest, and the rap
Id settlement of these lands will force
the building of the transportation
lines.
From Astoria to Huntington, and
from Portland to Ashland, the base
ball erase has full hold of the state,
and every vacant lot Is being utilized
In preparing for later contests.
One of the greatest attractions of
Rose Festival week will be the 50
mlle and 100-mile automobile speed
contests to be held during the after
noon of Thursday, June 4. This will
be the greatest racing event ever held
on the Pacific coast; the course lies
east of this city, each lap being 14,
miles, and a grandstand seating 10,000,
people has been erected In full view,
of the start and finish of the races.
No machines will be allowed to enter
which are not capable of a speed of (5
miles per hour. Three magnificent
silver trophy cups are offered for each
race one valued at 1500, one at 250
and four at 1100 each. The entire
course will be oiled and In perfect
condition, the roads being closed to
all traffic during the hours of the
races and guarded by detachments of
the Oregon National Guard. A field
opposite the grandstand will be re
served for the use of any who may
wish to view the races from automo
biles or carriages, while telephones
stationed at different points will re
port the progress of the races, an
nouncement to be made on bulletin
boards.
The Rnscburg Commercial club is
after a practical cannery man to co-
operate with the people of Rnseburg
in establishing a fruit cannery.
FISH COMING TOMORROW.
First Shipment of Fry for the Year to
Arrive Tomorrow.
The first assignment of trout fry to
reach La Grande this season, will ar
rive tomorrow morning according to
telegrams received today by those to
whom the fish are consigned. The I
fish car will arrive on No. tomorrow
morning and all consignees are notl-'
fled to be on hand to receive their1
quota. The total shipment Is nearly
200,000 fish, and It will be distributed
by the six anglers who receive the
shipment, in all tributaries of the
Grande Ronde river. I
