County, Says Paper. .
"Oh, pshaw!" said Mr. Shaw.
Mr. Shaw wan not consciously mak
ing a pun uprtn his Inherited cogno
men. He was merely perusing a string of
numerals presented to him by one. Mr.
Will Peterson.
Mr. Peterson Is the suave gentleman
who Is herding democratic mavericks
Into the camp now busily engaged In
working the hair brand "Independ
ent," said hair brand being designed
to entlcn the tenderfoot voter Into
voting Into general use that distilla
tion known as "Chamberlain's Sena
torial Tonics," guaranteed under the
Oregon Journal's pure food editorials.
Besides being agent for the "tonic,"
the guileless Mr. Peterson is chair
man of that engaging committee of
democrats who are persuading ambi
tious democrats to go out among the
faithful and unfaithful and roll up
sufficient independent votes to help
the "Tonic," regardless of local suc
cess. Also, theolly Mr. Peterson Is en
gaged In greasing the ways for large
chunks of the slimy slmoleona to slide
down Into the democratic campaign
slonable candidates charmed 'for the
nonce as real candidates.
It was at this point the topmost
point of, the greasy way that Mr.
Shaw ejaculated:
"Oh, pshaw!" " V
Mr. Shaw was a candidate for repre
sentative when he came over from
Freewater to Pendleton to correct' an
error in the filing of his petition. The
error was corrected and Mr. Shaw
was still a candidate. He was a can
didate until the merry Mr. Peterson
carelessly passed over to him a list
bearing the amounts to 1e assessed
against each of the democrats running
as Independent candidates to aid In
spreading the virtues of the "Cham
berlain Tonic." ,
Mr. Shaw's assessment was marked
at $100.
But Mr. Shaw was not there with
the century. His sox were "Shawknlf
not a scam nor a rip In them. They
held fast and no coin leaked out
Thrn It was Mr. Shaw became not
a democrat running as an Independ
ent candidate. Hs resigned.
Then It was that to the overbal
anced Mr. Peterson came the turn to
aste cerate:
"Oh. pshaw!"
And he did. Therein lies the true
talo of the vacancy on the Independ
ent ticket.
And there are others threatened.
The price of the tonic comes too
high. Pendleton Tribune.
