1 ' Four Lose Life in Fire. T
New York. May 7. Four lives were
lost In a fire, evidently of Incendiary
origin, in the tenement district this
mornlng. i Samuel Sachs, Eva Berg,
Hattie Kopelam and one unidentified
man, were killed. More than a score
were badly injured. Many were
asleep when the alarm was sounded.

' Kotwlthstadning that the Oregon
railroad commission has ordered new
freight rates to become effective last
Sunday, the La Grande freight depart
ment of the O. R. & N. Is still shipping
under the regular schedule. The rates
which were changed to points east of
The Dalles, will be fought by the O.
R. & X. and that no doubt is respon
sible for the non-appearance In this
city of the new tariff schedule. The
to abide by old rates until the O. R.
& N. Instructsthe agent by sending a
new tariff schedule.
The rates are changed by the com
mission and were published in The
Observer some time ago, will mean
additional profits to the shippers, and
naturally, the city as a .whole Is
awaiting with interest to see what ac-
t'on will be taken, or what is to be-
come of the new rates themselves.

Union this afternoon from Eagle val-

La Port, Ind., Hay 7. No more
bodies were found on the " Ounnes
farm today, but no cessation has been
made In efforts to unravel the deep
mystery about the place. Bessie
Conklln of ' Michigan City, Ind., a
sweetheart of Ray Lamphere, Is the
only suspect arrested in the case and
she told the police today that Lamp
here threatened to burn the Ounnes
farm at one time in her presence.
Just at noon today six watches, one
of them a woman's, were found.
In the examination ' of the bodies
found, some show ' fractured skulls
others death by poison.
Sheriff Smutzer has left here for
Chicago to hold a conference with
the Chicago police In regard to the
theory that the Gunnes farm Is a
clearing house for a band of Chicago
murderers who disposed of all the
bodies to Mrs. Gunness.

The city council last evening strug
gled with weighty problems, most of
them pertaining to bills . against the
city, until an extremely late hour of
the night Mayor Hall presided and
the following councilman responaed.to
the roll: Monroe, Kreiger. William
son, Bolton, Bay, Meyers, Andrews and
Curtis. -
For nearly three hours the matter
of bills was the sole tople for 'discus
sion. Later on, however, things liv
ened up a bit from a listener's point of
view, when the La Grande Entertain
ment and Market Day association pre
sented a petition for permission to
conduct a parade and hold band con
certs on the street, the ltd Inst Af
ter some discussion In which the feas
ibility of converting Adams avenue
Into a speedway was thoroughly
threshed out, the petition was granted,
and the council went on record as
heartily in favor of allowing all con
cessions in Its powers te further the
market day scheme. ,

matters that come under the jurisdic

gates and John A. Johnson, governor
of Minnesota cannot develop over one

luctance of these men In allowing a
place of amusement to be open and
operated on Sunday was soon dis
pelled when Councilman Meyers, Cur
tis, Kreiger, Bay and Andrews voted
to grant the Jlcense without append
ing a clause relative to the Sunday
matter. This vote followed a decision
by City Attorney Baker that there was
no ordinance at present forbldCIng the
theater from opening Its doors on
rest day.
A revised resolution dealing with
the oil storage question was presented
and referred to the proper commit
tee. It Is In substance the same as
the one which Mayor Hall exercized
his veto powers on some time ago, but
objectionable features in the original
have been remedied and It Is thought
this one will pass. . .

some time last night In his car. The

San Francisco, Cal., May 7. Patri
otism ran riot in San Francisco today.
The reception to the Atlantic fleet was
great, but the reception to the men
ashore was greater. Soldier and sailor
were pelted with flowers and show
ered with adulation and admiration.
Enthusiasm for Evans was unquench
able and amounted almost to devotion.
Not even the reception to Admiral
Dewey in New York after Manila bay,
equaled what Evans received today In
San Francisco.
The Idol of the navy was cheered
from the moment he fell Into line un
til he was driven to the St. Francis
hotel to Join his wife and daughter.
When the parade reached the re
viewing stand at Van Ness avenue,
the rear admiral and Governor Gillette
fell out of line and took their sta
tion. As the men passed, each gave
the marching salute. Although In
great pain, during the demonstration
the grlzzeled admiral frequently smiled
and bowed his acknowledgement to
the great cheers that greeted him, -

Walla Walla, May 7. Lying In a
hole at the foot of an unrooted tree
on the" bank of North Fork in a wild,
mountainous country by two "young
ranchers, Dorsey Brunton and FriU -Ross
today found the body of Ms
Anna Aldrlch, who has been missing
since last Friday. The discovery cul
minates Interest In , the continuous
search that has been made since last
Saturday and for which three arrests
have already been made. Jack, Bud
and John Barnes, sged respectively 18,
tS and 16, are In Jail charged with
complicity In her mysterious: death.
She was last seen alive in a carriage
with Bud Barnes 'Friday, while ' en
route to Waltsburg to attend to some
legal business. Barnes appeared,
without her.;; : .
Later her strong box was found
open and a blood-stained handkerchief
wej found in Barnes' overcoat.
This morning a $1000 reward was
1 offered for her recovery, dead of
