LATE Ml
The court house was well filled last
night with a representative gathering
of Pendleton men and women to do
honor to the memory of the late
Judge Thomas G. Halley, says the
Pendleton Tribune. The members of
the supreme bench, which Is now In
session In this city, occupied their ac
customed places. Chief Justice R. S.
Bean presiding. A series of resolu
tions eulogistic of Judge Halley's char
acteristics as a man, a citizen, a law
yer, neighbor and ' friend were pre
sented by Robert J. Slater who, after
delivering a short address, moved
their adoption and they' were unanl
mously accepted.

a number of years been his partner In
the practice of their profession he was
regarded as being more familiar with
Judge Halley's attributes as a lawyer.
Judge and citizen. Judge Lowell paid
a splendid tribute to. his memory and
characterized him as one whose every
aim In life was to be just to his fel
lows, true to his family and to fully
discharge his obligations as a citizen
of a state which he loved without hes
itation or equivocation.
La Grande Men Speak.
Similar Eulogies were pronouncec"
by District Attorney F. S. Ivanhoe, J.
D. Slater of La Grande, and W. M. Pe
terson of Pendleton. Judge Eakln, "of
the supreme court, also expressed hie
appreciation of Judge Halley's many
excellent qualities of manhood, as he
!new him through an acquaintance of
2 years, and Chief Justice Benn paid
a splendid tribute to his affability
when on the supreme bench durlnr
that trying experience of consultatlor
when the merits of a case are being
tried without the restraint of the cus-
omary formalities. At such times he
vas uniformly charitable toward the
fpinlr:ns of his colleagues, always dis
posed to contend for his own opinions.
but at any time ready to recede If j
shown that he was In error.
The general tenor of the speeches
was one of the highest appreciation of
Judge Halley's attributes as known to
the people of Tendleton, where his life
was an open book and those present
willingly accepted the eulogies of his
associates in the law as not over
drawn, but merited by the splenrtl.:
career of their departted townsman.

It Is expected that the Itlpa-la branch
will be In a condition to permit the;
establishment of train service by the '
O. H. & X. company and It Is quite ;
Tobable that the construction depnrt- !
ment will Inugurn1e service similar &
to that now In operation on the Lewis-
ton-Vollmer line of the Northern Pa
cific. Ckr.ernl Superintendent Buckley
stated that ho was anxious to havo
srtmc kind of service Inaugurated, but
that the matter was In the hands of
the construction department and the
road will not be turned over to Mr.
Buckley's department for two or three
months. While refusing to make a
positive statement. Mr. Buckley said
that it was hie opinion that the con
struction department would Dlace an
accommodation train In service as soon
as the road could be operated In about
three weeks.
The train will probably carry one
sleeper and day coaches and do a
small freight business. The train will
be scheduled to leave Lewlston In the
evening, making connection at Rlparla
with the oPrtland flyer from Spokane.
While this schedule may not be
adopted by the construction depart
ment It has been suggested by offi
cials that such a service would ac
commodate the people.
