The annual election of the Lyle
Tuesday Musical' took place yesterday
at the home of Mrs. N. Molltor. The
new officers were: President, Mrs. E.
O. Moore; vice-president, Mrs. Fred
Curreyi secretary, Mrs. Robert New-
Itn; treasurer, Mrs. i. folack; li
brarian, Mrs. C. J. Scrtber.
It waa decided to give a dance In
the near future to raise funds to en
tertain the Women'a Federation of
clubs, which convenes here In Octo
ber.
Reports show that during the year
large chorus of ladles' voices had
been organized and have at their com
mand an extensive repertoire.

Returning from an extended trip of
Inspection Into the Cornucopia and
Snake river country, Charles E. Por
ter, manager of the Baker telephone
exchange, and Charles W. Reynolds,
division superintendent of the Pacific
Telephone company, who lives In Spo
kane, had many things to say of the
wonderful work that Is being done on
the new Snake river railroad which Is
pushing Its way Into a vast empire
heretofore shut out from the world be
cause of no means of transportation,
says the Baker City Herald. It was a
revelation to both Mr. Porter and Mr.
Reynolds to see the productiveness of
Eagle and Pine valleys and note what
splendid mining sections are located
to the northeast of Baker. But the
thing that interested them most was
construction of the new road which,
after lying dormant since the panic,
was started again a few weeks ago.
Manager Thompson, of the Utah
Construction company, who has the
work In charge, has a small army of
men employed and expects to put on
many more. They are at work now
tunnelling a mountain and Mr. Porter
said It la quite a sight to see. Near
the town of Copperfleld Is stationed
the power plant which the air com
pressors, electric light plant and other
machinery. On one side of the moun
tain Is a crew of men drilling with the
compressed air drills, and Immediately
on the opposite aide of the same
mountain Is another crew at work
driving a tunnel from either side. The
compressed air is taken over the
mountain from the Copperfleld plant
In a pipe and the air drills on the op
posite side are run. An electric wire
la carried over the mountain along
with the air pipe and that furnishes
light. People of that vicinity have
hope that they will be able to ride to
Baker City on a standard gauge rail
road via Huntington before the snow
files another year.

be held In this city Monday, May 4,
at 8 p. m. This meeting Is called for
the purpose of electing delegates to
the state convention.
