LOCAL OPTIOK
Pendleton, Ore.. April 28. With
over 800 signatures thertto, a peti
tion asking that the people of Uma
tilla county vote upon the question of
prohibition at the June election, will
be filed with the county cli-rk this af
ternoon. For weeks, past the petition has
been circulated to somo extent nbout
the county and at present it Is in the
hands of Fred Taylor, who says that
It Is now ready for filing. The peti
tion contains the names of nearly 900
voters, but owing to the fact that
some of them were found to have
failed to register they were cut out,
thereby reducing the number to 802.
As a result of the petition now
ready for filing the people of the
county will become dry until voted
otherwise by the people.
Should the county as a whole not
go dry the status of the individual
precir.r!" ""I A-nvnA nnon the voting
in the same. A precinct casting a ma
Jorlty of votes for prohibition be
comes dry, while a precinct showing
a majority sentiment against prohl
bltion becomes wet When the coun
ty votes upon the proposition as a
whole, there Is no necessity tor pre
cinct petitions being filed.
At the clerk's office this morning a
petition was received from Uklah, but
owing to the fact that the precinct
boundaries were not properly de
scribed It has been sent back by Clerk
Baling. But as the Ukiah people will
have a chance to vote upon the prop
osition anyway. It will not matter if
their petition is not returned before
the first.
May 1, or SO days before the elec
tion, Is the limit for the filing of local
option petitions.
