A picturesque character Is Martin
King, one of the pioneer locomotive
engineers of the Mountain division of
the O. R. & N. at La Grande, nays the
Pendleton East Oregonlan In a char
acter sketch of one of La Grande's
O. It. & N. engineers. King Is not only
a philosopher, engineer, good Judge of
human nature and an alt round good
fellow of the old school, but he Ib an
enthusiastic miner and prospector and
has driven location stakes all over
the mountain region of Idaho.
In summer King mines and proa-
i""" " cvnirmi taano, navlng some
excellent claims in ' the vicinity of
Thunder mountain and others at Sol
dler, in which he Is deeply Interested
and which he will tell you about on
the slightest provocation. .
In winter he returns to his engine
and works for a "grub stake" for the
next summer, enlivening the engl.
neerr "dog hpuse" with thrilling
stories of his summer's experiences
and in exploiting the glories and rich.
ea oi me uem state, of which he Is
an ardent lover.
on first sight you would mistake
.ing ror a foothill farmer. He looks
It and acta It,. much to his credit His
'"""'l mn shirt front short-
stemmed cob pipe, ' corduroy pants,
showing contact with the oil In many
places, his kindly, beaming counte
nance and contagious laugh are known
and respected all over the O. R. 4 N.
system. . ' '
Nobody ever aaw Martin King
"dressed up." He la no "easy mark"
for the La Grande clothing stores, but
he la a mighty good fellow and expert
with an engine and very, very few
discredit marks are set down against
him on the company's records, so if
he has on a dirty shirt pr a greasy
cap nobody notices It for It la Martin
King, and he Is all right, reffardleaa
of elbthes. .
It is not known whether he can
dance or not His social Instincts have
neyer been sounded deep enough In La
Grande to determine Jhls rfact ' But
he can make time on the road and is
a good fellow to get along with and so
"society" does not worry him.
The boys all like to fire for King.
He Is an "easy man" on an engine,
that Is, he can do more with less wor
ry than most men and gets along all
right with his fireman.
When King lights his pipe and gets
his slouch hat adjusted and his legs
crossed and begins to talk about his
Idaho mines, everybody In hearing
stops and sits down there for the
Is promise of a mighty good story,
iou lorgei an about the long night
runs over the mountain division, the
thrilling runaways, the hair-breadth
escapes from death on the rail and
hear only his exhlllratlng tales of the
mines, of the yellow streaks In his
ledges, of the nuggets hidden away In
the bottom of this prospector's magic
sack 'at home, of his hopes of finding
a fortune next year, and of the mother

side.
Along toward spring railroading be.
comes Irksome. The throttle Is post
tively disgusting to him and he longs
for his frying pan and. flapjacks and
tne snaaow of his towering Idaho
mountains.
Every summer he hopes to strike It
rich and everybody who knows Martin
King sincerely hopes that he does so.
