For the first lime La Grande fans
have seen their club aggregation In
action. . In an .Interesting: practice
game with the Eagles' team at the
ball park yesterday afternoon, the
professionals rompvd around the dia
mond in a highly pleasing manner.
However,' all was not perfect and the
grandstand frequently expressed Its
dissatisfaction at the carelessness of
some of the club players. The play
era are snappy, active and know the
Lgame, but not being pitted against
their equals, the natural consequence
win that the men were not up on their
ton the way they would have been
had a. stronger aggregation faced
them. Comments at a laudatory na
ture wre numerous as the
went through their try-out.
Manager O'Brien has the "makin's"
of a fast bunch. This was plainly evi
dent yesterday. Lowdcll. who hereto
fore has covered first base most ad
mirably, and long since made a hit
with fans, was off color yesterday and
committed three bad ones. The In-
t field, Including O'Brien on the mid
way baar. VanHorst on third and Beck
at short make up a speedy bunch. The
way Beck at short covered his posi
tion was cause for Joy to the fans. In
the outfield the team la also strong,
as demonstrated by the "way the field
ers pulled down everything coming
their way. Big Zimmerman in the
middle garden i as good as his avor
dupols. Isaacs is a sure footman and
nailed some good . ones yesterday.
Kooser Is too well known to need
comment; his Work was "up to snuff
as It always Is. "' .
O'Brien has a quartet of pitchers
which is hard to numerate. Hlggens
opened the game yesterday and. twirl
ed for three Innings. The only south
paw n the squad is Fucheu, who took,
man finished. The grandstand was
undecided who Is the best of the three
but agree that all are tip-top.
Behind the bat the manager has
nnes. Emrlck made a hit.
He keeps working and talking simul
taneously and equally well with tne
fiwt that he always keeps the team
moving.' .His peg to second is nifty.
Purdv Kot behind the mask alter ine
sixth and, though he talks less, does
as good work as Emrlck.
The Eagles surprised everybody.
Their work was first-class In view of
the fact that this is the first time the
men have lrtid their suits on this year.
The team erred frequently but were
together most of the time. Only two
nlavs were sensational: when Abegg.
McClure and Ellsworth doubled and
also when Alstott pulled ' down a
"daisy" after a long sprint In left
field. ,
The small score to which the club
team was held is due in a large meas
ure to the clever battery which was
loaned by O'Brien. Hudson, the
IGrande Ronde bojj, was pitching
the, first. Behind the bat Fut
made good. He haa a whip, to baaed'
that equals Emrick's.
