The searching party which for many
hours practically walked over every
foot of river bottom between Hllgard,
where Mr. Batters fell in the- river
from the logging train night before
last, down to Perry, 'where the dam
Is oleated, but no trace of the drowned
man has been found. The party, has
disbanded and given up Its search.
Two theories arj advanced which
might explain the mysterious disap
pearance of the body: that the swift
current has carried him over the Per
ry dam and down the river toward La
Grande, or else the body has become
lodged under a log, thus escaping the
careful search maintained for many
hours.
The hunt was thorough. A long
rope stretched across the river from
shore to shore, was a guide line to
which 'men were holding at intervals
nf thro feet. This cross , line was
commenced at Hllgard and the silent
but effectual search continued on
down the river to Perry without results.
Another clean-out drive is to be
started at Hllgard soon, and If the
body Is lodged under a log It will be
found then.
