SETTLERS AVOIDING PENDLETOXj
Railroad Report Shows Pendleton Is
Only City Not Registering Quota,
No settlers in the vicinity of Pen
dleton is an item recently appearing
in the monthly report of the Harrl
man lines that Is attracting much In
terest locally. ' Other towns In this vi
cinity are receiving- their quota of
homeseekers, but absolutely none have
made Pendleton their destination, ac
cording to the Pendleton Tribune. The
Dalles received 10 colonists. La Grande
received 14, Baker City got IV. Asto
ria 15, and Walla Walla 23. They set
tled all around this city after their
long flight but to none of the new
comers did Pendleton look attractive.
A prominent resident and business
man of this city who dislikes publicity
so much he refuses to be quoted, said
In discussing the situation: "From
year to year I have been noticing this
lessening in the numbers of settlers In
this neighborhood. Several years ago
we received a nmber... They are pros
perous men now. For the past two
years we have received scarcely none.
It is because the people here make no
efofrt to attract new settlers, nor do
they welcome them when they do
uuiua.. ti ill icr
towns all around here are receiving j
settlers almost dally, while we can not
even register one. 5 i! :j . ' - '
"I have taken the matter up with
the railroad men, and they tell me
that the conditions are not right for
settlers here, nor is the town adver
tised. .... The. farmers are enlarging
their holdings, practically excluding
the small investor. It Is a matter of
no surprise to me that this city .re
ceives no Immigrants."
Catholic Centennial.
Philadelphia, Pa., April 28. Phtla.
delphla's Catholic centennial eclebra
tlon, which has been In progress here
since Sunday, and which has attracted
prominent prelates and noted Catholic
laymen In all walks of life from every
part of the country, was marked to
day by a children's festival. Thous
ands of parish school pupils partlct
pated in the day's exercises at the ca
thedral, at which Archbishop Ryan
presided. The principal event of the
week will be tomorrow night's fub'
Ho meeting at the Academy of Music
at which addresses will be made by
Rt'Rev. Mgr. Loughlln,' the Rt Rev,

Lcaae Guns in Texas.
Austin, Texas, April 23. When the
state legislature passed a law Impos
ing a tax of SO per cent on the gross
proceeds from the sale of revolvers. It
was confidently anticipated that the
treasury would benefit largely. It has
not. Hardware dealers no longer sell
pistols but lease them for a period of
50 years, and thus evade payment of
the tax, while the possessor of a rent
ed gun is quite contented, being satis
fled that tho firearm won't be worth
much to him at the expiration of the
60-year lease.
: Stork Mudo an Error. '
Jackson, Miss., April 2J. Dr. V. S.
Pitts, a prominent Webster county
physician, vouches for the truth of
the statement that a -year-old negro
girl of Cedaretta has become a
mother. The Infant weighed seven
pounds at birth. This Is believed to
be the earliest birth recrd In the
United States, although such Instances
are said to bo not uncommon among
the native negroes in Africa.
