Chicago, April 20. The opening of
the Birmingham division of the Illi
nois Central railroad today will real
ize E. H. Hari'lman's ambition to con
trol a sea to sea system. It will now
be possible to take goods off the dock
at Savannah, Ga., the easternl termi
nus of the new division, and to keep
It on Harrlman rails until they reach
the dock at San Francisco.
The Birmingham division connects
with the Georgia Central, which com
pletes the final loop of the eastern
division. In obtaining the Georgia
Central,' Harrlman also obtained the
steamship line operating between Sa
vannah and New York.

Portland, April 20. Safe crackers
made a good haul last night when
they broke the strong boxes In C. H.
Jarkell company's offices and Ault
man & Taylor's offices, and secured
$1500 worth of currency,' godl bul
lion and ostrich plumes. The men
drilled both safes and used no ex
plosive. They are thought to be the
same men who robbed the Lundy Jew
elry .hop In San Francisco recently
and made away with $50,000 worth of
