La Grande shippers are awaiting
anxiously for the effectiveness of the
new distributive freight rates from
Portland to points east of The Dalles.
Aocordlng to Indications, It will not be
long, however, as the Baker City com.
plaint la about adjudicated and fol
lowing such a consummation will be
set the date when the new rates are
effective. A Portland paper refers to
the matter thus: '
Up to the present time, though the
decision was handed down a couple of
weeks ago, the railroad company has
had no Intimation as to when the or
der will be slgneOTsealed and deliv
ered. Judge Cotton, general coun
sel for the railroad corporation, admit
ted thla morning that he had received
a copy of the. commission's decision
Identical with the copy published some
time ago in the local press, but that
places no obligation upqn the O. R. A
N. It did not com In tne lorin oi m
mandate directing the company to re
vise and reissue tariff schedules to
conform to the ruling, It being simply
a notice that tha railroad commission
had announced It findings.
Since the handing down of the rul
ing, there have been- a number of pre
liminary matters to attend to, which.
It Is understood, must be disposed of
before the matter Is In proper form
for the lsuanc of the formal order.
One of these matters i the complaint
of the Baker City Commercial organi
zations which are asking for an equal
izing rate out of Baker City.
A number of conferences in relation
to the decision in this case have been
held between Attorney J. N. Teal,
counsel for the transportation commit
tee of the Chamber of Commerce, the
plnintiff in the case, and Judge Cotton
for the O. R. & N. It is 'understood
that each side has made a number of
recommendation that are to be em
bodied in the official order, and In
hese recommendations a blank spaci
left for the filling In of the date.
ifter which the new rates shall apply.
Inasmuch as the new rates will loj
iff about one-sixth of the gross earn-
ngs of the Q. R. & N. on all buslnesr
originating In Portland consigned eas'
of The Dalles, It is a safe bet that th
R. & N. Isn't going to sit up night r
rglng the railroad commission to put
he order into effect.
While definite Information Is not ct
hand, It is almost certain that as sooi
is the Baker City complaint has been
adjudicated, which will be some tl nu
ll la week, the commissioners will pn
;are the order and fix upon the lnltlu
Jate for Its operation.
