ported Fulton.
Hlnee criming to this city ho re
cpjved a telegram from former Con
jtrussmnn Hermann, which also refut
ed another charge made by Mr, Ho
ney. He denied thnt he wai the "sack
lioldur" for John II. Mitchell during
his last campaign; that he had paid
J. H. Smith $1500 to come In and
break the hold-up proceeding, and
utated how Mr. Honey had attempted
to secure, an affidavit from Mr. Powell
whom Heney In his charge stated as
being oenversant with the facts. This
Powell refused to do, and when Mr.
Heney a few days ago failed to get
this affidavit from Mr. Powell, Heney
asked Powell to keep quiet until after
the primaries. Ho cited his record In
congress as to the charge that he had
worked for the "Interests." He re
ferred to his vote on the rate bill and
the present bill which affects certain
lands along the lines of the Southern
raclflc. .
He claimed thnt Governor. Cham
berlain was allied with Heney In their
attempt, to blacken his record.
In Ala closing remarks he dwelt a
few momenta upon pending legislation
nd staed a number of bills that he
was desirous of assisting In their
passage.
He was repeatedly encored, and he
poke up to the limit of his time in
order thut he might catch No. 5, so he
ould roach Portland this morning,
v.hcro he will speuk tonight. ;
Ho may deliver two speeches ln
Portland before the primaries, but
v, iiulil not sny until he reached Port
land. He had Intended to speak in
renilleton and The Dalles and other
eastern Oregon points, but later de
cided that he would return to Port
land and answer Mr. Heney while the
latter was there.
For as strenuous a campaign as this
1ms been, Senator Fulton Is standing
the strain remarkably well and Is con
fident thnt the vote next Friday will
lift the odium that has been held over
him by his political enemies.
FLEET REACHES SAN DIEGO '
(Continued from page 1.)
craft, loaded to the guards with sight
seers and relatives and friends of the
men on board the battleships, hovered
around the big fighters.
I Little In the way of reception was
possible this afternoon., owing to the
lateness of the hour and the fact that
' the officers and men of the fleet were
busily engaged In making everything
ship shape for the reception of the
many visitors who will, throng the
decks In the next three days.
I This evening at 8 o'clock an Infor
mal dinner will be given at the Hotel
del Coronado to Admiral Thomas and
other officers of the fleet. This funo
tlon will be a brilliant one.
While the banquet is taking placr
the Coronada shore will present t
striking picture. Cireat baskets of re
fire will line the shore at short Inter
vals for a mile. The warships alsc
will be Illuminated, but the great feat
ure will be the lighting of the city, t
quarter of a million Incandescent
lights will outline the principal build
ings of the city and ropes of lights wir
twinkle from the great light masti
which rise above the dwellings In th
high residence districts. In addition
to these there will be 250,000 Japan
ese lanterns, which will be employed
principally on the launches, ships and
other craft In the harbor. It will b
practically one blase of lights from
the ships off shore to the highest ele
vation of the city. The most striking
piece In the scheme of Illumination
will be an electric flag flung between
the two wings of the magnificent
Grant hotel building and of such In
genious construction that It will seem
to be constantly waving.
-.
Gillette Arrives,
Governor Gillette arrived with his
party to greet the Atlantic fleet as
the chief executive of the state. As
ne stepped rrom the car he was
cheered by thousands who came to the
depot to greet him. He was whisked
to the Hotel Coronado In an auto,
where the .governor's party occupied
27 rooms. Although the governor has
not entirely recovered from hit recent
Illness, he felt In good condition this
morning. .
Hours before the time set for the
arrival of the fleet, hundreds, of peo
ple were clustered out at Point Lorn a
and Point of Rocks, to secure the best
spots to view the coming of the fleet.
Soon after dawn many were on their
way" with binoculars and lunch bas
kets prepared for the wait.
Although the .fleet was not expected
to arrive before 1 o'clock, hundreds of
craft were out on the bay by 8 o'clock.
A score of sea-going vessels took on
loads of passengers and went down
the coast to meet the fleet.'
The Hotel Coronado la packed to
the roof.- Every room and every cot
In both the hotel and the tents of the
city are taken and hundreds of peo
ple are there who have gone over for
the day only. At 5 o'clock this morn
lng ships were 0 miles south of here,
going at eight knots In order not to
arrive ahead of time. They slowed
down to seven knots before the morn
ing was over.
The Atlantic fleet was sighted at
11 o'clock about 30 miles distant, and
arrived' at 1 o'clock.

Galveston Plan for Walla Wulln.
That Walla Walla will adopt the
Galveston plan of city government will
more, than likely be the recommenda
tion of the CommerclHl club of this
city, says the Walla Walla Statesman.
The matter was brought " "
meeting of thnt o.-panlzation last night
by George Ludwlgs, who referred to
an article lately appearing In "Suc
cess." "TfTe present form of government
we have In th,!s city is old and obso
'ete," said Yiee-Freslilent Dement,
wn Trelrtir;ir. "We need an up-'
to-date form of city government."
''btR expression seemed to voice the
sentiments of every one present,
Several spoke along the same line and
all were of the opinion that the new
system should be tried here. The
matter was disposed of by a motion to
