Five New Companies to Be Recruited
In the State Soon.
Portland, Ore.. April 14. (Special
correspondence.) With the passage
by the senate a short time ago of the
Army bill, the i paved tor the
establishment In Oregon of a number
of new military companies. In ordor'
to bring the Fourth Oregon regiment
up to a regular Army basis., as re
quired by the war department, It will
be necessary to reci-ult five new com
panies of Infantry.
Applications frort almost every
thriving city In the st te are being re
ceived at Portland by Adjutant Gen
eral Flnzer. The task of selecting the
new stations Is yet to be taken up by
the Oregon military board.
The desirauiilty and advantage of
being a station of a military company
of the National Guard service should
appeal to every enterprising commu
nity. Remarkable changes have oc
curred In the past few years In the
National Guard service, so that It Is
no longer a strike-breaking expedien
cy, but a part of the first line of the
nation's defense. Companies of the
guard are already located at such
points as Eugene, Roseburg, Ashland,
Cottage Grove, McMlnnvllle, Wood-
burn, Oregon City, The Dalles, Baker
City and Pendleton, while strong ap
plications for one of the new com-
r-- TrirrA V... tif.fe
places as Astoria, Seaside, Rainier,
Canby, Sllverton, Medford, Grants
Pass, 'Forest Grove, Newberg and
Klamath Falls. Other applications
are being received weekly. The pur
pose of the Oregon military board is
to distribute these new companies to
the best possible advantage among the
better class of cities of the state. '
The problem that is just now con
fronting the National Guardsmen, of
whom there are some 1400, ts that of
suitable armories. The national gov
ernment supplies arms and equip
ment, ammunition, shooting galleries
and ranges, and the war department
has suggested that the various states
should at least provide suitable ar
morles for housing the troops and
storing equipments. Portland, , of
course, has an adequate armory, pro
vided and paid for by Multnomah
county. The last legislature appropri
ated $10,000 to be paid out at the rate
of '25,000 a year for the construction
of armories In the smaller communi
ties of the state. This appropriation
Is to be voted upon under the initia
tive and referendum at the coming
June election. From a military stand
point the armories are indispensable
from an economic point of view they
are a good Investment. At present
the state is paying out 15000 a year
In rentals for Inadequate rookeries.
Thus It will Be seen that In compara
tively a few years the new armories
would pay for themselves In the sav
ing to the state of rentals. The suc
cess of the measure Is already practi
cally assured, the only obstacle being
a possible lack of understanding and
appreciation of the measure by the
voters of the smaller communities
who, by the way, are the ones most
Interested.
the same day the Cove high school
