With about two weeks yet of colo
nist rates, there seems to be no hope
for anything like flourishing business
In the passenger department of the
Harrlman systems. For the month of
March the total Immigration business
was extremely low, but even that will
be higher than the present month, un
less a sudden rush occurs at the elev
enth hour. La Grande is one of the
fortunate towns of Oregon, as It is one
of the four cities oh the O. R. A N.
which have not been affected by the
closed Portland gateway. Through
the Huntington gateway, Huntington,
Baker City, La Grande and Pendle
ton will not be benefited by the open
ing of the gateway to Portland on
April 9. Even Portland Itself does
not anticipate any noticeable returns
from the opening, as It came too late.
In speaking of this Incident, the Jour
nal says: '
The Portland gateway has been
open since April 9, but It Is not be
lieved th rmnlt will h tn rmatl in.
crease the colonist movement The
fact Is that there Is a light movement
of homeseeker travel this spring from
the east, owing" to the financial con
ditions that preceded the opening ot
sale dates, March 1.
' Take on Dismissed Men.
John M. Scott, assistant - general
passenger agent,, who went to Puget
sound and reduced the working forces
In the passenger department there-,
and closed the Olympla office of tin
company, will go back over thi
ground Immediately and' restore to
.heir former positions the men who
are available. Four men will resume
work in the Seattle office, three in th.
Tacoma office, and one in the Olym
pla office.
The principal reason assigned for
the falling off of homeseeker travel
over the transcontinental lines to tin
entire Pacific coast this spring Is that
eastern farmers and men of propertj
who were last fall contemplating re
moval to the coast, found that the;
L-ould not readily dispose of their
property to advantage, and they a:--i
waiting more favorable conditions oi
the money markets.

Shortly before 2 o'clock this morr
'ng a fire alarm was turned In fro
Wlllovale and the firemen discover i"
that the Wlllovale skating rink w--a
mass of flames, says the Baker Cly
Herald. The building was too fn
Tne to be saved, so they devoted thrl' j
attention and efforts to saving t' i
structures nearby. The rink burned :
completely, only a few charred Jol?'
remaining to show that there had
been a building there. The structui- !
was a shell of wood and was so dr
that It burned like tinder, taking th
flames but a few minutes to lick It
up. The building with its contents of
skates and orchestrelle, was a com
plete loss. Bennet & Jessup, the
owners, estimate their loss at 17000,
with no Insurance.
The origin of the fire Is a mystery,
as, it could be plainly seen that the
flames broke out In the southeast part
of the building, which Is farthest from
the office and the stoves. Some think
that the fire was caused by defective
electrical wiring, while others are of
the opinion that It was' of Incendiary
'iiigln, as some people were heard to
express their delight at the destruc-!
Ion of the rink, claiming that it was
lot a fit place for boys and girls to
congregate.
