The spring fishing fever Is begin-
ing to break out. Since the practice
of stocking the streams began several
years ago, there are few ountles in
the state that offer better sport in
this line than our own.
W. F. Matlock has been honered by
being reappointed as a member of the
state fair board and he will also serve
as president of that body during the
next four years. His new commission
as a fair director will expire March

Mrs. Margaret Herrin of Portland,
arrived In the city last evening and
left this morning for Elgin In the In
terests of the Degree of Honor. She
will return this evening and, accom
panied by Mrs. C. P. Ellsworth, will
spend Sunday at Hot Lake,
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Wilkinson
arrived from Union this morning en
route to Elgin, where they Intended
to visit their daughter, who to teach
Ing school there. As the Elgin train
had departed before their arrival, the
visit has been postponed.
William Mulr, the well known pio
neer miner, who has been spending
the winter In southern California, re
turned last evening to spend a short
time. During the winter he married
a California lady, who is now visiting
In the east. They will make their
home at Perrls, Cal.
W. F. Anderson spoke at Island
City last night to an appreciative au
dience, on "Pure Politics." He will
end his speaking campaign In La
Grunde. Mr. Anderson has spoken In
all of the principal precincts of the
county, and his speeches are one of
the unique features of the campaign.
Fred Taylor, the superintendent of
the sugar factory, Is recovering from
his recent Illness. During the past
few evenings he has found time to
compose a song, which the quartet
will sing the evening Senator Fulton
speaks here, Monday night. Mr. Tay
lor la the author of the Booster song
which captured the entire valley dur
ing the Booster excursions last fall.

Walkerff Wedding.
A quiet' little wedding affair was
conducted; last evening at the home
of Presiding Elder Glllilan, when G.
E. Walker and Miss Mabel Neff were
married. Miss Neff Is a well known
young woman, who has resided In La
Grande a couple of years, and Mr.
Walker Is a young man of sterling
qualities and but lately of West Vir
ginia. He Is a carpenter. They will
make their home In North La Grande.
POLLS OPEN AT TWELVE,
Candidates In Big Stir as the Primary
Hour Approaches.
The polls of Union county on pri
mary election day will be open from
12 until 7 In the evening, thus differ
ing from the general election hours.
It Is but five days more now, until
the primaries stare us In the face. The
only notlcable result f this nearness
of the crucial hour, Is an Increased
amount of activity on the part of the
candidates. The finishing touohes are
being given the various corners of the
county. One or two public speeches,
some Individual electioneering, and
the campaign for nomination will be
over. Senator C. W. Fulton's address
on Monday evening and W. F. Ander
son's In this city on Wednesday eve
ning, will constitute the stumping feat
ure of the campaign, as far as an
nounced. I
