Spring activity will become more
uiil mure appHrwiii tut eacu n
passes. While the large sawmills of
4he county have . been running for
wme time, the majority of the smaller
anills are just biglnnlng on their
season's work. Thus the payrolls of
, the county are bfglnlng to Increase as
', , usual at this season of the year. Dur
- in the latter part of 107 it was fear
ed that many of the smaller sawmills
". f the county, owing to the demoral
.' twj condition of the finances and
ih lumber market, would not be able
run. But the financial skies
cleared away in a great measure, and
the eastern demand for lumber Is re
. suiting In spring orders and the log
ging camps and sawmills will all be
tuny soon.
A gentleman who has been look
ing over the valley for the past two
weeks, remarked last night that he
never was In such a country before.
"I have been trying to rent a farm,
but I guess I will have to give it up
and buy. J thought I would like to
rent one year, and this would give
me an opportunity to better Judge
which portion of the valley I would
like to make my home, but there are
so few places for rent. Your people
are supremely contented. Like all lo
calities, there are always a few places
for sale, but I never lived In any
country where there are so few desir
able places to rent."
One week from today the results of
the primary election will be known
unless the contest in some particular
Instance, la very close. As far as
. county nomlnatlons.j It Is a matter of
purely guess work dn the part of the
. average speculator.as expressions are
few as to who the winners will be.
Seemingly there Is apparently very
little Interest, but the vote caat next
Friday may not coincide with - this
view. It la more than probable that
the fact that so many good and com
feteat men are candidates that the
vetage eltltea la delicate la express-tag-
opinions, notwithstanding the fact
that he has preferences.
Considerable over half of the spring
planting la the valley, with the ex
-section of beet seeding, is through.
The fall grain ' never looked better.

tion made today at the annual con
vention of the TravelerB' Protective
Association of AVIscoimln Is acted
upon. It Is believed that the number
of fatalities as the remilt of collisions
will be materially reduced by the In
troduction of this clans of equipment.
In the opinion of the traveling men,
legislation of this character for the
nrotertlon of life ar.d limb Is far
more Important than the reduction In
passenger rats. The mnttcr will
probably be brought before the na
tional convention of the Travelers'
Protective association, to be held In
Milwaukee on June 22.
