LIQUOR All ISSUE III
THE UK ELECTIONS
Chicago, 111., April 7. A deter -
mined fight for and against the Sun -
day opening of saloons marks the
spring election In Chicago today.
Voters -In other sections of the state
will be given an opportunity to decide
between the warring factions of the
"wets" and "drys." Leaders in the
movement for an open . Sunday are
Jubilant and declare that Chicago will
today be rescued from the reign of
hypocrisy. The appearance of a bal
lot on the Sunday question In today's
election was brought about by the
United societies, which collected II,
060 feet of signatures, representing
the desires of nearly '170,000 voters
to pass upon the question. The peti
tions made a pile nearly seven feet in
height and justify the United Societies'
workers in their hop for a success
ful termination of their fight
Local option is the principal Issue
to be decided by the spring elections
over liiree-iuurtiis ui i'uo iui iiii-
nois counties. Springfield, the state
capital, has been the scene of a hot
campaign. The liquor dealers of that
city combined to give a "horrible ex
ample" by voluntarily closing all sa
loons for a few days, in order to show
the voters what the city will resem
ble -under the order of things pro
posed by v the Anti-Saloon ' league

bition will doubtless be one of the
most successful ever held on the Pa
cific coast. Society leaders of Oak
land and San Francisco are manifest
ing great Interest In the show. Num
erous beautiful and valuable cups will
be awarded to prize winners.

' workers. The "wets" are hopeful that
' this practical illustration will bring
about a revulsion of sentiment which
will send the "drys" to overwhelming
defeat in the election.
Twelve hundred townships and
towns are taking part in today's gi
gantic contest between, the forces of
"personal liberty" and the opponents
of the "rum demon." Spirited cam
paigns have been waged In all of
them. Leaders of the Illinois Anti
Saloon league are confidently pre
dicting that from 2000 to 1000 sa
loons will be wiped out of existence!
In the state today.
Today's elections are being held un
der the provisions of a township, city
and village local option law. The
last local option elections previously
held in the state took place last No
vember, when, out of 111 precincts in
the southern part. of -the state, 142
voted "dry." This was heralded as a
tei vicuuy uy liiD Auu-Sdiuuu
league officials, and they are hopeful
of repeating the victory on a larger
scale today. .
. In this city, the stronghold of the
liquor traffic In Illinois, one-half of
the area Is "dry" territory, saloons
having been abolished from all ' the
principal residence districts.
