LA GRANDE IRON WORKS D, FITZGERALD, Proprietor Complete Machine Shops end Foundry ' SALOONS DID I 0 KANSAS Hon. C. W. Trickett, assistant at torney general of Kansas, has recently made the following statement with re gard to the closing of saloons In Kan sas City and the effect thereof, and refutes the statement sent out by the Model License league: This city Is the metropolis of Kan sas, with a population of about 100. 000. The Inhabitants are largely wage-earners and represent every na tionality.' We are located on the bor der, only an Invisible line separating us from Kansas City, Mo. The city ranks fifth in the manufacturing cities in the United States. One year ago there were 156 sa loons In the county, 200 gambling dens and about 60 houses of social evil. Today trtre la not a saloon, no open gambling den, nor a disorderly house. It Is the largest city , In the woriu without these dens of vice and as we have now existed about 12 months without them, it affords a living ex ample of the fact that a large city can grow and prosper without such evils. Prior to the closing of the joints w sent from 15 to 25 young men to the reformatory every year. In the 12 months since closing we have sent but two. The expense for prosecuting crlml nals has been .reduced 125,000 per annum. Expense for the police has been reduced as much more. Our bank deposits have gained by Jl.500.000. The merchants upon our streets ?iave had to employ additional clerks. One year ago, not to exceed two business men on the principal thor oughfares of this city, would have favored the closing of saloons. Today there are not two would favor open ing them. Twice since the saloons were eloped we have held a city election at which the issue was presented to the people, and at each election the people have endorsed present conditions. Every banker Is loud in praise of the present civic condition. The city is clean, crime Is at a minimum, merchants ! SIEGRIS 1 & tu. JEWELERS ARID OPTICIANS We wish to call your, attention to our REPAIR DEPARTMENT We are better prepared than ever to do first class work. If you have a. watch. 1 that does not give you satisfaction, oring it to us and we will guarantee we can fix it. Diamonds reset or mounted in new mount ing is one of our specialties. All our work guaranteed and promptly done. We will save you money SIEGRIST & CO- JEVVFLERS AND OPTICIANS prosperous and real estate advancing. The city courts, created for the ex press purpose of trying petty suits for the collection of rents and grocery bills and formerly crowded with a black docket every day, have now practically no business, for the reason the people are paying their bills In stead of being sued for them. Our DODulatlon has Increased at a greater rate than ever before. For the first time In 25 years the court of common pleas of this county opened Its term the first Monday In May without a criminal case. A year ago this city was trying to devise ways and means to spare the money to build additions to our city Jails. Today the doors of the Jails swing Idly upon their hinges, and we have no use for those we have. i schools has Increased largely, and we. have had to employ 18 additional teachers. The teachers inform us that this is largely of boys and girls of from 12 to 1C years of age, who prior to the closing of the saloons, were compelled to assist in supporting the family by reason of the father spend ing his wages for drink. The churltable Institutions report a reduction of more than two-thirds In the demand for aid. The Juvenile court which has the care of dependent children, had but two applications In the past eight months, while prior to the closing of the Joints, from eight to 88 children required aid and assist ance each month. At the commencement of the Con test a large number of our people thought It would ruin business and de stroy our prosperity, but It has stimu lated business In all lines. This city Is now the experimental station of the world. If Kansas City, Kan., can close Its saloons and keep them closed; and if the closing pro duces prosperity, happiness and con tentment, than It is reasonable to as sume that such results will follow a '4W44444444 like policy In ot.ier large cities elsewhere.
