J. H. HUNTER
The details of the disappearance of
J. H. Hunter In Alaska some' time
ago. Is made clear, as far as anyone
Knows. In a letter to Albert Hunter of
Island City, from a lady of Sunrise,
Alaska.
Mr. Hunter was known to a laxee
number of La Grande people, and the
following letter to Albert Hunter sets
forth the details of the disappearance:
Sunrise. Alaska, March 16, '08.
Albert Hunter,
Island City, Ore. .
Dear Sir: I am In receipt of the
sad news of the death of your kins
man, Mr.' J. H. Hunter, and I will tell
you as near as anyone knows, how It
happened. .
He was on his way from Kinnlck to
Gerwood and traveling alone. When
last seen he was going up the Crow
creek summit There . was a man
camped there and the wind and snow
Hunter to stop over with him, as the
snow was drifting. Mr. Hunter was
told he could not get over the moun
tains until the blizzard was aver. But
Mr. Hunter would not stay. About
five days after that there were two
men from here going to Klnlck and
they found Mr. Hunter's dog on the
summit. The dog was almost starved,
and there was no sign of the owner.
There can be no doubt of Mr. Hunter
being dead, for a young man could
not live, lost In a windstorm In Alaska.
They think he was blown off the top
of the mountain Into the canyqn. sev
eral hundred feet deep, for there If
no sign of him on the trail. In the
spring his body may be found, but It
Is impossible to find him now. He
told me he had a good quartz ledge
located near Klnlck, and as there has
been some quartz found up there and
there Is a quartz mill going In there
this spring, I wanted to advise you to
find out for sure what he had, for it
might pay well. But you can't trust
everyone In Alaska to tell you.

Chosen to Rcpreseut Oregon,
Wtstar Johnson has been selected
by the faculty of the university to re
ceive the third Rhodes' scholarship to
Oxford from Oregon. He passed the
examination successfully . last year
along with three other candidates, but
was defeated in the final selection by
Mr. Wlnans of Willamette university.
At the spring commencement he was
graduated, since when he has been
attending the Boston Technical school,
taking a course In mining engineer
ing. As he was still eligible the fac
ulty committee of the university. In
that he was their choice last year, ex
tended to him their support this year.
and a letter has been received from
him. accepting the appointment . and
stating that he will be In Eugene about
July 1 to make final preparations for
his departure.
Wlatar Is the youngest son of Pro
fessor Johnson, first president of the
University of Oregon, and during his
college career here he maintained a
high average - In scholarship , beside
being a very prominent athlete. His
many friends here are . more , than
pleased with his good fortune and are
confident that he will be a creditable
representative of his state and col-
