It has been practically decided by
the O. R. ft N. and the management
of the Washington state college at
Pullman to run a farmers' train
through Umatilla county during the
first week In May, although some mi
nor details remain to be completed as
yet. . '
A second train Is to be run through
eastern Washington at that time and
It Is the Intention of the management
to continue the itinerary Into Um'a
tilla county. It Is understood. If the
train Is run through Umatilla aa In
tended, stops will be made at Milton,
Weston, Athena, Adams, Pendleton,
Echo, and possibly Hermlston.
At each of these places lectures will
be given and practice, demonstrations
made, showing the waste of soil forces
In growing one crop on soli continu
ously.
The train which was run through
the Palouse district last month was a
decided success and everything prom
Ises an exceptionally successful trip
When the matter Is finally decided
upon arrangements will be made tc
advertise the train thoroughly and to
entertain the party at the different
places at which the train will stop.
Objects of the Train.
The specific objects of the train
and the lectures is set forth In a dp
cular scattered from the train on the
first trip through the Palouse district,
as follows: - '
To awaken interest In the magnifi
cent soli and natural resources of the
Piilouse country.
To help us remember that this great
heritage must not be wasted but pre-
uM-ved and even made better for fu
ture generations.
To teach the wisest methods of soli
treatment, to make the most out of It
without loss.
To stimulate an Interest In better
'rop production; better kinds of
a heat; less smut; fewer weeds.
To, Impress the great ecomonlc fact
'hat half time businesses never pay.
Idle soil Is wasted soli. Factories run
ning on half time lose money.
Our soil is rich enough to grow a
crop of' some kind each year. Why
lot do It?
To show that while summer fallow
'ng may appear necessary In a wheat
growing system, It Is poor business
management.
To help us all to study out how we
may still keep out wheat production
and yet double our profits by growing
something else on our summer fal
low. To press home the fact that our
great railroads are anxious to help
solve these problems and the state col
lege la alive to the Interests of the
whole country.
