Members of the Elks' Lodge Soliciting Shares Today and Will Buy Com
mercial Club In. Five Days
The La ' Grande Commercial club
will be In a position to pay every cent
of Its Indebtedness and In addition to
that will pay the stockholders an In
terest on the stock. Thus the club
dies an honest death.
This was all made possible through
the efforts of the La Grande lodge of
Elks who. without a practical doubt,
will purchase the building for I9D00.
At their meeting last night it was de
cided to take this move rather than to
. build a new home on the site pur
chased by the lodge recently. Hun
dreds will be expended on the building
after the purchase is made. In this
way the large structure will be con
verted Into a place of beauty. Today

stock will have been raised 'to float

. The transaction, if consummated,
will mean two desirable features:
gives the Elks a home at nominal cost,
where the public can secure an amuse
ment hall, and last and by no means
least, the transaction means a clear
ance of all debt outstanding against
the Commercial club Itself. Not alone
will the club be able to pay Its debts,
return the money to shareholders with
Interest, but there will no doubt be a
few dollajre as a neuclus for future ac

milk famine in Chicago was averted
today when employers met the de
mands of the men by giving them $1
a week raise to be based upon the rate

Stump-speaking, almost on the eve
of the primaries, is the order of the
day In this section of Union county.
The rest of the week will see several
political addresses by candidates who
aspire to nomination at the primaries.
In this village last evening were two
addresses: R. D. Hamilton, candidate
for representative from Union county,
and W. F.' Anderson, candidate for
nomination to the office of county
cler. Both meetings were welt attend
ed and each speaker laid down his In
dividual platform In logical style.
At Summervllle Attorney ' J. W.
Knowles addressed an audience. Mr.
Knowles Is candidate for circuit judge.
The La Grande attorney goes to Elgin
this evening on a similar mission.
Talking Railroad.
F. W. Gaines of Pendleton, will ad
dress an audience In this place tomor
row night on railroad questions. He Is
working for the people's Interests In
securing lower rates In eastern Ore
gon, and has several measures which
he wants brought before the voters of
the state. He was scheduled to Bpeak
'ast evening, but postponed It to give
room for the candidates. '

Walla Walla, April 3. Determined
to make Whitman college the "Ya:e
of the Northwest," Walla Walla city
and county has given the college 3200,-
000, and has started In a campaign to
raise $2,006,000 for that school.
New buildings have been projected
that will cost $1,000,000. . Promises of
large sums have been secured from

All Inside Information has It that
tonight's match la absolutely on "the
square." The men will wrestle for a
purse of $10,000 split, 80 and 40 per
cent. The Russian is a 3 to 1 favor
Ite, but at that price Ootch looks good
to many bettors. ,

Plymouth, England, April 3. Ac
cording to an official .report filed to
day, 82 sailors were drowned and 28
rescued as a result of a collision be
tween the British destroyer Tiger and
the cruiser Berwick during maneu-

After fighting death all night, four
sailors were rescued today, while an
other died or the Injuries sustained
during the collision. All told, 33
deaths have resulted from the acci
dent. Mlsjudgment of the distance
caused the collision.

assembly district conventions will be
