St. Louis, April 2. Political baqk
sliders from both the old parties, Unl
the number of several hundred, assem
bled here today In what promises to
be the most enthusiastic natlonni con
vention ever held by a third party. Al
though today's Populist Municipal
Ownership' Single , Tax Independent
Voter convention Is not as large as
some of Its predecessors held by the
people's party In former yenrs, there
is no lack of the picturesque and bu
colic features that have made the pre
vious conventions memorable. What
ever may happen at the polls next No
vember, the defenders of the rights of
the plain people are today laden with
hope, which will likely find expression
before the day Is over. In fervid ora
tory and"1 vitriolic denunciation that
will make the partisans of wealthy
malefactors blush with shame. To.
morrow may see the old parties trl
umphant as usual, but 'today belongs
to the horny-handed sons of toll, and
their representatives, filled with Joy
and good St. Louts beer, will not allow
any opportunity for an outburst of
enthusiasm to escape them.
Foremost among the populist
"hoBts" Is the Hon. Tom E. Watson,
the "plumed knight" of the plain peo
ple. That the scholarly, earnest man
from Georgia, sah, will again be chos
en to lead the third party reformers to
defeat appears so certain as to be al
most a foregone conclusion. The Ne
braska delegates, who are Instructed
for William Jennings Bryan, are al
ready faltering In their allegiance to
the great commoner.. Kansas and
Texas have the largest representations
in the convention, and they are work
ing against Bryan. Georgia and other
southern states represented are stand
ing firm for their beloved Tom Wat.
son. Apparently, so far as the pres.
ent convention is concerned, Bryan's
goose is cooked.
Among the other presidential possl
bllitles Considered Is Senator Robert
M. La Follette of Wisconsin. His
nomination would be dependent upon
t merger with the Independence
league. This does not now seem prob
ibie, and even If the deal could be
onsummated. It is hardly likely that
the Wisconsin solon would accept the
nomination. Several representatives
)f the Independence league, William
Randolph Hearst's new party, are in
3t. Louis today, but any attempt to ef
feet a fusion with the populists will
i edependent upon the ratification of
Tom Watson.
