R- B. Miller, general freight agent

water, traveling freight agent, are In
Baker City today and thl. afternoon
met representatives of the Business
Men's association and the Citizen's
league, to discuss a distributive freight
rate for Baker City, relates the Baker
City Herald.
After the situation had been gone
over thoroughly It was the opinion of
the railroad representatives that Ba
ker City could not be given a distrlb
, utlve freight rate, or placed on an
f equal footing with Portland, which
was the request of the local shippers.
At present the local merchants have
a rate east to Durkee and west to
North Powder and can compete with
Portland merchants only within that
territory. The Rose City Is greatly
favored by the ralrload according to
public opinion, as a distributive point
and goods can be shipped from Port
land to points outside of Baker's small

district cheaper than they can be
shipped from Baker, although the dis
tance here Is much less.
The excuse of the officials for not
granting the rate Is that If Baker Is
given this concession other towns
along the line would ask the same fa
vor and Baker would be no better off
than before, while the rates would be
reduced all along the line. The Baker
merchants desired a rata which would
give them an entrance Into the Grande
Ronde valley, and let them go east to
Huntington, but ' the officials did not
aee fit to grant the concessions asked.
After the meeting members of the
business men's organizations were not
satisfied to let the matter rest and
they Immediately telegraphed the
state railroad commission, asking for
appointment, at which time Baker's
side of the case would be argued.
Many feel that 'he outcome will result
favorable to this city.

To extend fhe scope of the La
Grande sugar factory and to Induce
Umatilla and Walla Walla county far
mers to begin growing sugar beets for
the factory. Is the mission of Elner
Slbbelov, field superintendent of the
sugar company to this city and county
this week, says the Pendleton East
Oregontan. The sugar company de
sires that Umatilla and Walla Walla
farmers raise experimental crops and
to encourage this will pay an excel
lent price for beets raised west of the
mountains.
Mr. Bibbelov wilt visit Hermlston,
where a number of farmers under the
government Irrigation project will
plant small quantities of beets as a
test crop and from there will go to
Walla Walla, where he hopes to make
contracts for a number of large tracts.
The beets raised west of the moun
tains for a few years would neces
sarily have to be shipped to La Grande
to be manufactured Into sugar, but If
the Industry would grow to any pro
portions In this and Walla Walla
counties, a factory would be eniao
tlshed near the beet raising center and
hundreds of people would be employed
In growing beets on land rented by
the company, as is now done In Grande
Ronde valley.
