Washington, March tt. Politicians
attribute a hidden significance to the
visit of William Jennings Bryan In
Washington today. The establish
ment of Johnson headquarter here
and In New York and other eastern
cities, and rumors of a plan to cap
ture the eastern dlegatlons to Den
ver for tha Minnesota man, have caua
ed some trepidation among the Ne
braskan's supporters In Washington:
Mr. Bryan will hold several Import
ant conferences with democratic
leader In Washington today.
Tomorrow Mr. Bryan will Invade
Pennsylvania, one of the strongholds
of the opposition to his canddlacy,
speaking tomorrow evening at Pitts
burg. Reports state 'that the mem
bers of the Pennsylvania Bryan league
have arranged an elaborate reception
for their chief, and that hi appear
ance In the Smoky City will mark the
beginning of a determined campaign
to contest the state delegation In the
interest of the Nebraakan.
From Pittsburg Mr. Bryan will go
to Parkersburg. W. Va., and thence
to Kansas City, Mo., where he will be
the guest of honor at one of the great
est political banquets ever held In the
west, to be held Monday night. On
Tuesday he will be In Lincoln and
will entertain the democratic and
populist editors of Nebraska at a
banquet. Later next week he will
begin a western tour that will Include
.'Itlcs and towns In Kansas, Colorado,
N'ehraska and Iowa.
While Mr. Bryan Is engaged In
swinging around the circle, his oppo
nents In the east will be busily- en
gaged In manufacturing Johnson- thun
der in the hope of preventing the Ne
braskan's nomination for the presi
dency. The antl-Bryanites hope to se
cure control of the delegations from
Now York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey.
Delaware and Massachusetts, with
possibly several others. In New York,
the Bryan opposition is headed by
Mayor McClellan and Charles F. Mur
phy, while other prominent politicians
have taken the lead In other eastern
states. While Johnson la considered
the logical choice of the anti-Bryan
Ites, either Judson Harmon of Ohio, or
Judg Gray of Delaware, would be ac
ceptable as a compromise.
According to report much work
has already been quietly done In or
ganizing the anti-Bryan men in Penn
sylvania, Massachusetts and New Jer
sey, and the Indications are, it - was
said, that the campaign will be a hard
one for the Bryan men to fight.
While the delegations from the four

state would not constitute a third of
the whole number, third being
necessary to prevent a nomination It
was stated that the backers of the
movement expect that if they can con
trol the solid delegations from four
Important states they will have little
difficulty In rallying other delegations
about them, and In that way massing
enough to defeat a nomination on the
first ballot.
New York has 78 delegates, Penn
sylvania (8. Massachusetts 82. and
New Jersey 84, a total of Jot. There
are 98 S votes, and Mr. Bryan will have
to get 648. To prevent his nomination
on the first ballot bla opponent will
have to muster 881 vote. It was
pointed out by friend of the Nebraa
kan that he ha many friend In all
th state mentioned, and that while
unlnstructed delegations might be
sent from each to th convention. It
would hardly be possible for th anti
Bryan men to capture all the dele
gate from each of the state. On the
other hand. It was stated that, with
th aid of th unit rule,, solid anti
Bryan delegations might be sent to
Denver. ' ''' ' ' '
In promoting their campaign ' the
anti-Bryan forces will have th co
operation of Minnesota, which will
send a delegation Instructed for John
son, and of Delaware, which has al
ready signified Its Intention of send
ing Its delegatea pledged tot Judge
Gray. Massachusetts, through Its
state committee, lias rviumtu tu u
