him were disappointed at the weak
ness of his presentation, he gave the
parting shot that he still had a lot
more up his sleeve that he would
make public later In the campaign.
This is cowardly. If Mr. Heney knew
anything, It was his duty to tell what
he knew, and the voters of Oregon
would know how to act. Mr. Pulton
Is In the state to defend his name.
Now let .Mr. Heney come forth with
his accusations If he has any.
MISCHIEF IN COMIC PICTVRK8.
A small boy of my acquaintance
became highly Interested, not long
ago, In the adventures of a naughty
youth presented In the comic sup
. plement of a well known newspaper.
The youth In the newspaper sham
pooed his sister's hair and annolnted
the poodle with a mixture of Ink,
glue and the family hair tonic, leav
ing the remainder of the compound
In the bottle for the use of his father
and mother. The results as ptctorlal
)y set forth were so Intensely amusing
that the small observer Immediately
took steps to repeat them In real life.
Much mischief Is suggested In such
ways as this, and the suggestions
come from artists who have, little
aympathy with children knowing
them mainly as a theme to make jokes
about.
Analyse the humor In the funny
pictures of our newt-papers, and you
will find that In nine cases out of ten
It rests upon somebody's misfortune
an apple-woman upset by an automo
bile, a sleeping tramp annoyed by
mall boys, an absent-minded old gen
tleman walking Into a tank of water.
Such are the subjects that are given
to our children to make them luugh
while we are trying to teach them to
be thoughtful of the comfort of oth
ers, genuinely polite, and considerate
of every one. Walter Field, In Fin
gerposts to Children's Reading.
Under the primary nominating sys
tem, the charge la general all over
the state that the larger cities In
measure control the nominations.
There are nHturally two reasons for
this. One la, the largest cities natur
ally have quite a perrenlutrc of the
voters or they would not be the larg
est, but a more potent reason is the
fact that It eusler for the thickly set
tled communities to register thun In
the rural precincts. The candidates
naturally work harder in' the thickly
Settled places and tit to it .hut th-lr
friends register. Unless the voter
register they cannot p.artl-lpote In the
prlmnry ruminating election In or
der tha' the rural (!l.-tiui can com
pete with the cities, they must make
an effort to register their full strength
for by so doing and atieni itig the pri
maries, they will not permit the cities
to dictate to the extent that they
would otherwise,

Heady to Open Incurs.
New York, March 25. After hav
ing been declared a hopeless wreck
by no less an authority than J. Pler
pont Morgan, the Knickerbocker Trust
company, most important of the New
York financial Institutions to , suc
cumb during the panic of last fall,
will reopen its doors at noon tomor
row. The assets of the bank are given
as approximately $60,000,000, while
the liabilities are about $49,000,000
The gross deposits amount to $46,
$70,000. Deoositors representing
$38,000,000 assented to the reorgani
sation plan. Among these was Mark
Twain, who Is said to have $50,000 In
the bank. Principal credit for the
reopening of the institution is ac
corded to Commodore Frederick G.
Bourne, one of the directors, who Is
alleged to have spent $1,600,000 of his
personal fortune In the4 effort to re
organize the company.
It is believed that the opening of
the bank will have a favorable effect
In restoring public confidence. The
reorganized Company will start in
afresh under a board of directors
chosen by three men like Messrs. Lew
Is Cass Ledyard, Henry C. Frlck and
Myron T. Herrlck. Everybody Is con
vinced that the regeneration will be
thorough, for Just as surely as a burnt
child dreads the fire so does the
"soaked" depositor dread "water" and
"plunging." To this belief Is added
the reassuring knowledge that large
sums will soon be brought back. Into
the normal channels of business. The
phychologlcal effect of such consid
erations may be strong.
