VIRTUE THE LAW OF MAN'S
NATURE. t
If there be a God who ia bii abso
lutely perfect moral Being and man
la created o pattern after Him, vli
tue must be the law of man'a na
ture. This I the teaching of religion
and an examination of human nature
reveals that auch teaching la true.
Let us aeo how It does this.
Human nature! when examined
carefully, shows that man Is not In
dependent of his fellow men. It pos
sesses special qualities which are fur
the very purpose of keeping him In
touch wth and bind him to the res'
of munklnd. Unless he does thls,hH
nature will become dwarfed and stunt
ed to a more or less degree. Thua,
man finds himself a member of a so
ciety, each member bearing some re
lationship to the rest with the obliga
tion of reciprocal .duties and respon
slbllltlos. As experience teaches him
that his own welfare Is greatly de
pendenf on his fellow members per
forming their duty towards him, It
follows that he must do the same to
wards them. This also will be bene
ficial for him, because they will be In
better position to fulfill their duty
towards him. Thus the welfare of
the Individual is dependent on the
welfare of the whole of society and
this from the very nature of its con
stitutlnn. So the Individual learns
that he is made for society and to
promote Its welfare and happiness, the
same as he Is Intended to take care
of his own welfare and happiness.
But let us trace this idea In actual
life. Man first of all finds himself a
member of a family. During, his in
fancy he Is absolutely dependent on
hlB parents for the supply of his
wants. To their love and care are
due his welfare and happiness. Were
these wanting he would be In a most
pitiable condition and perhaps his life
endangered. As he grows oldcrs he
finds that he has duties and obllgtv
tlons towards his parents and brothers
and sisters. The former he must
obey, and to the latter accommodate
himself especially to those younger
than he. As his observation In
creases he perceives that the happi
ness and welfare of the family are
dependent on all Its members per
forming their respective, mutual du
ties. If any of them fail to do so It
brings trouble and suffering to the
others. It is evident that the family
Is a unit and that. none of Its members
is independent of the others, or can
safely Ignore them without Injuring
the family and himself.
On attaining manhood he enters a
wider sphere, and here likewise he
soon discovers his dependence. For
the very work with which to earn hr
bread he must look to others. On
their honesty and good "Will towards
him depends In great measure his wel
fare and happiness of all concerned
Experience in daily life soon demon
strates that society Is the develop
ment of the family Idea, and so the
same rules hold good In the one case
as In the other.
Now the mutual duties and obllga
tlons of the members of society are
evidently In accordance with law, the
law of that nature which they pos-
ness in common, 'inese duties are
manifestly directed towards the wel
fare and happiness of society and not
