By securing the vote of two of the
three Judge In the Baker City-The
Dalles debate at Baker City last eve
ning, the first numed school won a
clean tille to the championship of
eastern Oregon's debating . field and
placed ItHtlf In line for the state
championship. "Resolved, That the
government ehould own and operate
the railroads," was the question of
which Baker City had the negative

The Astoria , debating- team, the
champions of the western Oregon
schools, will be brought to Baker City
this spring, to contest for the cham
pionship of all Oregon.
Those who heard the debate say it
was especially Interesting and that

Model Restaurant About to Undergo
Many Improvement.
Workmen are engaged today In
tearing down the structure which was
formerly occupied by J. E. Coffey's
barber shop, but damaged by a recent
fire. The Model restaurant will be
extensively enlarged and repaired as
soon as the old structure is razed.

tist church are being put In place to
day. Among them are some elcgunt
memorial windows. Every detail Is
being carefully looked after, and
when the hour for the opening exer
cise of the dedicatory services begin
next Flrday, the church management
will have the church completed. Much
Interest centers In the appearance In
La Grande of Dr. Brougher. Ills rep
utation Is common knowledge, and
the seating capacity of the church will
no doubt be taxed.

Before 10 o'clock this morning the
seats for Charles B. Hanford had been
practically cleaned off the sale board.
The entire middle section Was gone In
short time, and only a few scattering
seats about the outsldes of the house
are left. '
Telephone calls from outside points,
such as Cove and Elgin, have been
numerous.
Before a mere handful In the way
of an audience, the .basketball game
on skates was pulled off last night,
the final score being 7 to 5 in favor of
the White Shirts, the team which loHt
hut time. In many features the game
was highly exciting. It was much
faster and somewhat rough, but the
excellent team work of the first game
wan missing last night.
