HCMAX NATURE AND
KELIGIOCS TRUTH.
(Continued from par )
than a hundred thousand years, and
it has played an enormous part In the
history of mankind in the whole de
velopment of human society. Nobody
can Imagine what mankind would
have been without It up to the pres
ent time. Either all religion has been
reaching out for a phantom that does
not exist, or reaching out after some
thing that does exist, but of which
man, with his limited Intelligence, has
only been able to gain a crude Idea,
And the latter seems a far more prob
able conclusion, because, if It is' not
so, it constitutes a unique exception
to all the operations of evolution we
know about As a general thing In
the whole history of evolution, when
you see any Internal adjustment reach
ing towards something, it is in order
to adapt Itself to something that
really exists; and If the religious crav
ings of man constitute an exception,
they are the one thing in the whole
process of evolution that Is exception
al and different from all the rest.
And this Is surely an argument of
stupendous . and resistless weight .
The whole force of this argument
shows that there is no natural Inward
craving without an external object to
satisfy it, Now men do crave after
Ood. The Psalmist exclaims: "As the
heart panteth after the water brooks.
panteth my soul after Thee, O
mankind; that the safety of society,
as even noted Infidels have acknowl
edged, Is Inseparably bound up with
maintaining the Idea of Ood. They
may rest assured, that what the Psalm
ist said in his day. Is true In general
now, that "The fool hath said In his
heart. There la no God.? (Pa. 14:1).

E. D. SELDER
God. My soul thlrsteth for God, for
the living God." , (Ps. 42.) This is
no abnormal Instance. The man whose
spiritual nature Is strong will thus
long after God. There are thousands
of instances and the purer the life
the stronger the longing. Thus the
evolutionary theory establishes the
strongest probability almost amount
ing to certainty, that there is a God,
by discovering the law that every In
ternal Impulse reaches out to some
thing which exists.
These arguments establish the great
est probability that there Is a God.
They do not, however, produce Him
and herein fall short of positive proof,
but the presumption they afford Is so
strong that It compels attention.
But there la another proof which
furnishes positive evidence' to the be
liever of the existence of God. It can
not of necessity do so to the unbeliev
er, but he must take It under consid
eration. For It is of sufficient import
ance to compel his attention and de
mand investigation. This Is the argu
ment derived from a personal knowl
edge of God. This knowledge Is sim
ilar to that which a man obtains of
another through association and Inter
course. There are men who show the
most Intimate knowledge of God. Who
not only speak of, but to Him. We
read of Abraham who was called the
friend of God. He, we find, spoke out
his mind to God as a man to man.
This Intercourse Is called communion
with God, or more commonly prayer.
Those who practice It will tell you
that it brings God to them. They
receive assurance thereby that He
not only exists, but that He hears their
prayers.
Abraham Lincoln, In the darkest
hours of the Civil war, was not
ashamed to kneel down and make
known his perplexities to God. We
have his assertion, of the relief he
thus obtained. The testimony of such
men cannot be dismissed with a con
temptuous wave of the hand. When
Daniel Webster declared that the
greatest thought with which his mind
had ever been occupied-, was the
thought of his personal responsibility
to a personal God, where Is the man
who will have the temerity to declare
that Daniel Webster was a victim of
superstition? Such an eminent lawyer
who stood at the head of his profes
sion, and understood the nature of
evidence was not the man -to be de
ceived by Illusions. Such personal
evidence Is positive In Its character
and cannot be Ignored. The man who
says that Abraham Lincoln and Dan
iel Webster were deceived. In order to
obtain a hearing, must prove that he
Is a better Judge than they, and also
than that vast number who have
walked humbly with their God and in
whose ranks are found the greatest In
tellects of theworld. Those who be
lieve need not be uneasy at any as
saults on their belief. Let them pos
sess their soul In patience for God
cannot be ruled out of His universe or
deposed from ruling Its affairs. Let
them not mind any jibes or sneers at
their stmplencsj In thus believing In
God. Because, when it comes to com
paring Intellects or brains, those of
the believing number have the decided
advantage.. The history of the world
affords abundant evidence of the utter
Inability of atheism to establish any
thing for the permanent benefit of
