Governor Chamberlain has spoken,
and In no uncertain terms. He has
shown himself to be a consummate
muter of the art of politics. If the
leader among 'the republicans could
only play tha game like George doe
how different It would be. The gov
ernor understands humanity and
know how to play upon the chords
of human feeling. The secret of his
success lies in this: Tha people believe
ha la sincere while he in turn ha ab
solute faith In the common people.
The republican leaders seem to think
the people are hot to be trusted, and
this is where they make tha fatal
mistake. The sovereign power in this
country resides in lha people. The
are the power behind the throne, in
fact they are the throne Itself. Lin
coin a great power was derived more
from his unbounded love for, and
faith in the people, than it was from
his great office and tha glory of con
quering armies. Napoleon arose to
his high station through the iove anc
faith of his people, and he fell wher
he lost that love and faith, and thr
republican party of Oregon must show
Its devotion to and confidence In th
people, or it cannot hope to succeed.
It Is a fatal error to attempt to re
fuse the people the right to nomlnatt
United States senator and to Instruct
the representatives to vote for the peo
ple's choice. The very fact that yov
feaChamberlaln will be the people!
choice will be the means of makln;
him so, because you are destroying tlv
faith of the people In your sincerity
The republicans enacted the prlmar:
law, why should they seek to repudi
ate It?
A party can make no more eerlour
blunder than to assume an attitude
which expresses plainly that the peo
ple are not to be trusted In making
choice of United States senator at the
polls. On the other hand, we have
the governor making his plea that h-
has unbounded faith In the peop
ine republicans again show thef
weakness when they express the fea
that a democrat may be selected In i
state with nearly 30,000 republican
majority. There is some reason for
this fear, and It Is well founded. The
republican party can regain the confi
dence and support of the people, but
not so long as the party appears to be
unwilling to trust the people's choice
for United States senator.

Ovef in the Burnt river country
there I considerable hatred between
cattle and sheepmen, It I claimed, and
following a story that sheepmen in
tend to this year Invade that section,
comes a warning to the effect that
they had better stay away, says the
Baker Herald.
Troubles In that section have been
of long standing, but during the last
few years there have been no demon
strations because sheepmen kept their
bands from grazing there. Tradition
states that drastic measures have been
practiced there at times to compel a
distinct division of the range, and ac
cording to reports this year such is to
continue.

COLONIST TRAVEL DROPS OFF.
sunuay Trains Into Spokane) Carry
Small Number of Easterners.
Travel to the northwest under thi
colonist rates showed a decided de
crease yesterday, when the number of
this class of passengers for Spokane
and points west on the transcontlnent
ai trains was less than on any day
since the arrival of the first trains,
says the Spokesman-Review.
It Is estimated that not more thnr
175 came to Spokane ever the Oxen
Northern and Northern Pacific yes
terday on colonist tickets, and of this
number less than 10 stopped here.
The Northern Pacific express arriving
from the Twin Cities last night at
11:50, had aboard about 60 colonist
and less than a score ended their Jour
ney In Spokane.
"I believe that the majority of the
pnssenKers who rode on the colonIM
tli kets are looking for work." said J.
H. Rothbert of Eau Claire, Wis., who
arrived In Spokane last night. "I
came here myself to look for work
In the sawmills. I was working west
of the mountains when the mill shut
down last fall on account of the raise
In the freight rates on lumber. I
saw a number of sawmill men n
train, but they went on to the Sound.
The Impression In the east Is that the
miiis in tne northwest are all ao-
Ing to resume running In full force
this spring."
