J. J. Scott, an experienced diver and
water man of Seattle, has been
brought to this city by John Todd for
the Duroose of searching the Umatilla
river thoroughly for the body of Troy
Todd, who was drowned at Shallal
crossing on the river last Saturday.
Mr. Scott organized a small search
Inff nartv this morning and will drag
the river and make a thorough search
In every way In the effort to recover
the body of the young man
Mr. Todd still offers the reward of
$100 for the recovery of the body and
U is believed that when the river sub
aides somewhat that It will be possible
t find it. The Indians of the reser
vatlon have continued to search, but
,(n to the high stage of the river
H was Impossible for them to find any
trace.
Mr ficott. who la to direct the eys
..m-tlc search now. is an experienced
water man and will begin at the point
where young Todd was dragged from
his horse and will follow the river
closely, dragging the channel where It
may be possible for the body to lodge
under water, and carefully searching
for a trace that may lead to Its recov-

Freewater-Mllton Fruit Crop Beat the
Yakima Output by $50,000.
Quite a reef Is taken in the sails of
the famous Yakima country when the
Freewater-Mllton district springs Into
the limelight with flgurea which ahow
that as a fruit country Yakima Is a
back number and playa second fiddle
to iust a part of the Walla Walla val
ley, aays the Waitaburg Times.
According to the statistics given out,
Yakima laat year shipped 45U,uuu
worth of fruit Freewater-Mllton
went them $50,000 better, ahipplng a
total valuation of fruit amounting to
$500,000.
Thla is a great plum for the Free
water-Milton district to pull out or
h northwest fruit pie. It lowers the
colors of the proud Yakima and holsta
instead thoae of the Walla Walla val
ley. Freewater-Mllton la not yet de
veloned. This year her flgurea will
be more Interesting and the year after
still more.

formed that W. C. Bristol haa closed
the office and regarde himself aa no
longer district attorney. The grand
Jury which he convened recently haa
been excused until next Tuesday.
Upon the request of the Portland
Oregonlan for a statement of hla poli
cies while In office Mr. MeCourt gave
the following Interview at a late
hour last night:
I, of course, do not kno and will
not know until I have assumed the
dutlea of the office, what matters are
pending there, requiring attention. I
Intend to dispose of all matters pend
ing when I enter the office, aa well as
those arlHlng In the future, as rapidly
as conditions will permit.
"Offenders against the law will be
brought to as speedy a trial and as
vigorous prosecution, as the Interests
of the defendants will allow.
'The office will receive my undi
vided attention.
All criminal matters will receive
full Investigation and where Indict
ments are reiurneu, viguiuu v uncu
tlons will follow.
"Civil matters will receive my earn
est attention and the government's
rights will be protected so far aa It
Ilea In my power to protect them.
'I expect to give the government
While In the office, aa I have alwaya
given other clients, ths best service
within my ability."
According to Mr. McOourt, he ha
hot yet decided upon whom he will ap
point as deputies and will not make
the appointments until he la actually
In office.
Thouah he will have to move to
Portland and retire from private law
practice, Mr. MeCourt will attll con
tlnue as one of the firm of MeCourt aV
Phelps, -though his partner will hence
forth do all the work.
