Is the plaintiff and William T. Col
lins, deceased, the defendant In a suit
brought today. Collin was at one
time pension agent for the government
in the District of Columbia, and left
behind him a shortage of S4S.S25.06.
The suit has been pending for over SO
years.
The title of the sulf Is The United
States vs. William T. Collins. The
present aetlon Is to collect frorn the
executors of two of the eight of Col
lins' sureties the amount that an In
vestigation showed he was short.
Collins was pension agent for the
District of Columbia from I860 to
1872, and left office under a cloud.
Succeeding Investigation showed he
was short S49.525.00. He was prompt
ly sued by the government ' He left
the Jurisdiction and evaded through
out life service of papers by deputy
United States marshals.
The government Instituted suits
against his sureties who had gone on
his bond of S 100,000. but never real
ized anything from six of them, and
finally sued the surviving two sure
ties, Robert Boyd and , William H.
Slater, both now deceased.
The case went to trial. A verdict
was In favor of Boyd and Slater, but
the trial Judge granted a new trial.
At the second trial the Jury returned
i verdict again In favor of the two

to the court of appeals, however, tlu
verdict was reversed.
The case for some years has appar
ently been forgotten, but will be re
.Ived by the suit instituted today.
The suit names George W. Evans
