iest money in a community, "fhe Com
mercial club of any community could
well afford to assist In the promotion
of a Chautauqua for lta advertising ad
vantages. Hundreds and thousands of
strangers hear of a city through the
literature connected with the Chau
tauqua. But In comparably the ben
efit of Chautauqua la through the ed
ucational and moral uplift which
comes to a community by coming In
contact, at the annual sessions, with
the finest and best minds In America.
Many a boy and girl, In the forma-
tlve period of their lives, find them
selves, when sitting under the Inspir
ation and listening to a HIUIs, a
Gunsaulus or a Mctntyre. Thousands
of men and women have been helped
Into higher living by the Inspiration
which comes with the annual sessions
of a Chautauqua association. If
were to put It in a phrase, .1 would
say that Chautauqua Is not an educa
tion but an inspiration. It Is clean
wholesome and beneficial recreation.
Now as to the business end of It,
let- me say that most Chautauquas are
organized as a corporation. The capi
tal stock depends upon the local situ
ation and the value of land In each
community. In most Instances a cap
ital stock of from 15000 to $10,000
would be found sufficient. This
would not be true, however, if a large
sum had to be paid for the necessary
lands. An auditorium such as you
111 need will cost from $2000 to 13000
and would seat 8000 people. The
transportation Is an all Important
matter'and must be looked after care
fully. An abundant and pure water
supply It absolutely necessary.
Let me again say in conclusion, and
let this be emphasized, that if you de
sire to organize a Chautauqua asso
ciation, be careful of the foundations
and be sure that you make them broad
enough to enlist the co-operation of all
good people. If we can be of any
service to you or your people in the
working out of the many details, we
will be pleased to aid In any possible
way. If you should organize toon.
we could arrange, no doubt, for some
of our talent to appear In your pro
gram this year. Then, of more Im
portance, your assembly would no
doubt be gladly admitted Into the
coast circuit, making the fifth Chau
tauqua, and the same circuit talent
would serve all. v
