MARKET DAY PROFITABLE

departments of the city Industries.
But it required the ever-Inspiring
presence of the band to start things
going right. Promptly at 1 o'clock
the concourse began to assemble on
Adams avenue, and before the last
echo of the concluding number from
the band had died away, Max Zimmer
man was on his dray, serving as an
auctioneer's table, and the sale of
horses and stock began. It was not
fault of the farmers if the sales did
not total what had been anticipated,
and It was no fault of the manage
ment. While there was a fairly satis
factory sale of horse flesn, It was not
as lively as It should have been by
reason of the stock In the city ready
for sale. The buyers were reticent for
torn reaaon or other.
The crowd was fully as large as had
been anticipated. About the bellow
ing voice that extolled the virtues ot
each horse or team that was brought
up for sale, were hundreds of cran
ing necks. Out at the outskirts the
crowd was well sprinkled with ladies
who watched the proceedings with In
terest. Market day a success,
All in all, there is no room for
doubt but what Market day is a whole
some plan and worthy of furtherance.
The city hes been full of people from
every part of the valley. The day has
served as a big holiday for farmers
to get together, to talk over prospects
for next year's crops, to dabble with
finances in the way of buying horses,
and in various other ways improving
the opportunities of the day.
The event has been thoroughly ad
vertised and the results are what they
should be warranted success. La
Grande has profited by the venture.
Several Individual Sales.
Horses were sold by Auctioneer
Zimmerman at prices ranging about
$125. Several sales were negotiated
this way.
But It Is Impossible to state the ex
act number of transactions made in
the city today, as many purchases were
made privately, the owners preferring
to sell that way. These deals were
generally between local parties. For
eign buyers stayed In close proximity
to the auctioneer's gavel.
The sales opened at 1 o'clock and
continued until well along In the af
ternoon. At 8 o'clock the crowds had
diminished but little, there being a
noticeable exit from the city, however.
