About 200 tons of coal are being
loaded and shipped out of here dally.
This fuel Is distributed at Kamela,
Pendleton and Umatilla, where the
shortage is acute.
Engineer John Gardner goes back
to his east end run tonight after a
brief lay off, due to sickness in his
family. Engineer Hlllman has been
taking his run.
Attorney J. W. Knowles, candidate
for circuit judge on the republican
ticket, left today for Enterprise, where
he will attend the dedication of the
new Fraternal building at that place.
L. Rayburn came out from the Pal
mer camps last evening, believing the
Bartlett trial was In progress. He re
turned this morning, however, and
will not come out again until assured
that the trial Is about to begin.
One of the attractions of market
day will be a cooked food sale at the
Adcook ft Fritta furniture store, con
ducted by the ladles of the Baptist
church. This Is to be similar to the
one held recently.
County Treasurer John Frawley left
last evening for Vale, where he will
personally look Into the oil situation
at that place. He Is one of the La
Grande men who are Interested In the
project there.
The locomotive crane used to load
coal into flat cars from the storage
bins, is not proving entirely satisfac
tory. Although in use since yesterday
afternoon, the work done by the ma
chine has not been up to expectations
thus far. Operators hope to remedy
the troubles soon.
Late this afternoon no orders had
been received by round house and
railroad shop officials declaring a hol
iday for tomorrow. Customarily, the
orders reach here in time to be posted
before closing hours, and, as none
have arrived, the shop will undoubted
ly be kept running tomorrow.
The La Grande Investment company
has purchased the bankrupt stock
owned by O. M. Heacork and are dis
posing of the jewelry articles. O. M.
Heacock Is now In Pendleton, but will
return soon to act as repairer In the
store.

A pretty wedding took place last
evening at 6:30 o'clock when Miss
Martha E. Holverson, formerly of this
city, but now of Hot Lake, was united
In marriage to A. K. Johnson of Per
ry, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. An
drew Anderson In West La Grande.
Rev. S. W. Beemann performed the
ceremony. The bridesmaid was Miss
Alma Anderson of Hot Lake, and the
groom was attended by Mr. Carlson of
Perry, Immediately following the
wedding a postnuptial dinner was
served In a delightful manner, about
25 friends and relatives being seated.
The bride was formerly a resident of
this city and the groom Is well known
here, though he Is working at Perry
at present.
HINT AT MANEUVERS.
American Ship at Manila Ordered to
Prepare for Service.
Manila, Feb. 27. A secret order has
been received here ordering all ships
at this station to be put in shape for
portracted service. This means at
least three months at sea and hints
at extensive maneuvers with Evans'
fleet when it arrives in the Pacific,

There will be plenty of racing In the
northwest this year to keep the horses
moving for a longer period than ever
before. Beginning at Taeoma August
17 and ending at Lewlston October 17
will give 10 weeks of continuous rac
ing. Besides this circuit there will be
racing at many other points like Walla
Walla, La Grande, Baker City, Boise,
The Dalles, Roseburg, Olympla, Vic
toria, McMinnvllle, etc. At these
minor places horses that are out
classed on the big .circuit will find
plenty to do No horseman need fear
to get ready for the races this year,
for there will be plenty of place to
race ofr all classes of horses. Rural

Dinner for Yankee Tars.
Lima, . Peru, Feb. 27. A dinner to
the officers of the American battleship
fleet will be given tonight by the war
minister and will be one of the most
elaborate functions of Its kind held
in the Peruvian . capital for many
years. Tomorrow evening the Na
tional club will give an officers' ball.
Night Riders on Raid.
Hopklnsvllle. Ky., Feb, 27. Night
riders destroyed the residence of
Bruce Gregory last night on a farm
west of the city. ' Mrs. Gregory was
fired upon while she telegraphed for
aid. A company of militia Is pursu
ing the raiders.
More Taft Delegates.
Springfield, O., Feb. 27. Two Taft
delegates to the republican national
convention were selected at the con
gressional district convention held
here today. General J. Warren Klefer
was nominated to succeed himself In
congress.
Vanderbllt Money to Ifungarla.
New Tork, Feb. 27. Two millions
of dollars of the Vanderbllt fortune
will follow Count Szechenyl to Hun
gary. This amount has been ordered
transferred from the Countess Bzchen
yl's private fortune In New Tork city
bonds to Hungarian gold.
ESCAPED FROM JAIL.
Forger Saw Ilia Way to Freedom and
Makes Good His Escape.
San Francisco, Feb.' 27. J. W. Wel
lington, charged with forgery on eight
counts, sawed his way out of an In
terior cell In the city prison last night
and worked hia way Into the cellar and
escaped. He has not been recaptured.
With Wellington were five other pris
oners, but none of these took advan
tage of his work or attempted to es-

Bay City, Mich, Feb. 27. The dis
trict convention of the republican par
ty met here today for the purpose of
selecting two delegates and two alter
nates to the Chicago convention. Taft
sentiment apparently dominates the
delegates, and men favorable to the
candidacy of the Ohloan will probably
be elected.
