(By Savoyard.)
It was the very year that the fatal
duel between Judge Terry and Sena
tor Broderlck lent frenzy to Ameri
can polltcs that California gave Mary
Anderson' and Charles B. Hanford
(who comes' to La Grande soon) to
American art. AJter triumphs that
might have palled the appetite for ap
ulause of the Disraeli of "Vivian
Grey," or Contarinl Fleming, Miss An
derson, whose genius had not yet at
talned the zenith of Its brilliant flight,
went into retirement in another hem
isohere and Is now a beloved wife, a
proud mother, a noble woman, an or
nament of a great profession, and an
honur to her sex "Our Mary" always,
Charles B. Hanford, at 48, Is In his
prime, a sterling actor, an estimable
gentleman, as admirable In private
walk as he is eminent in professional
life. Born in California May 5, 18G8
the boy Hanford was brought east
some years later and was educated iu
Washington, graduating from the
high school In 1881. He was destined
tor the bar, and studied to that end
at college and in a law school, but
man. Is helpless in the toils of fute,
and bo it came that Hanford was
drafted from the elucidations of the
recondite principles of Coke or Little
ton and set to interpretations of the
exhaustless fancies and multitudinous
philosophies of Shakespeare. Before
that, however, he was secretary to
Horace F. Page, long a leading mem
ber of congress from California and a
pillar of the movement to give General
Grant a third nomination In 1880. In
Washington young Hanford saw much
of official and political life and for a
time he was a clerk in one of the departments.
It was not until 1882, at the age of
23, that Mr. Hanford entered upon hie
professional career that has proved so
successful and made him a favorite in
every city and town of the Union. It
was at New London, Conn., that he
first appeared on the professional
stage In the company of that excellent
actor, William Stafford, then starring
In Shakespearean plays. That season
the young actor gave the promise of
the excellence he later attained the
bloom was redeemed by the fruit
and the following season he Joined the
company of Thomas W. Keene who
did more than his fair share to bring
the public taste to an appreciation of
the classic and heroic drama, a task
to which Hanford has succeeded, and
In the discharge of which he has fully
equaled and probably surpassed his
master. His next engagement was
with Robson and Crane, playing Aeg-
eon In their never-to-be-forgot pro
duction of the "Comedy of Errors."
