po,of wiping out Its faults and plac
ing it upon the standard that Is ex
pected of such an organization, and
with new life and new support It can
easily be placed on this basis. There
Is great need of active work. We have
just as wide-awake business men In
La Grande aa anywhere, and If they
will take hold of this club and give It
their loyal support, It can go out and
secure payrolls and assist greatly In
the upbuilding of the city. This club
may not all at once go out and secure
another sugar factory. It may not
land another county seat, but there
are many small Industries that In the
aggregate equal the larger ones that
it can secure; and the many little pay
rolls In time draw the large ones. Let
us get under this grand old club, re
construct It, bring it up to date, and
it will bring results.
COMMERCIAL CLl'B.
The mass meeting called for next
Friday night to decide whether or
not the La Orande Commercial club
lives or dies should receive most care
ful consideration by the business In
terests of this city. This mass meeting
should be attended by 'every business
man and property owner In the city.
It has been known by those who were
In close touch with the conditions of
the club that It was only a matter of
time when a financial readjustment
was Inevitable. The club has been
carrying a heavy load for several
years, so much so In fact, that the
board of management was compelled
to use most of Its energies In keep
ing the ship of state afloat. It Is
well that the end Is at hand, for the
meeting Trlday night will tell the
story whether or not It lives, or should
live.
The La Orande Commercial club
has been one of the factors In the
development of this county and city.
Things have been brought about
through this orgunlxntlon that would
have been Impossible for Individual
action to have accomplished. The
building and opportunities this club
have made possible has been a credit
to this city and has commanded the
respect of the leading men of the
stale who liavo visited It. It has ac
complished much and Is capable of
accomplishing, much, but, plainly
peaking, It has accomplished Utile
during the past two Hi- three years.
There Is a reason for this: former at
tempts to revive It have failed and
during this period, from lack of sup
port from the property 'Interests of
this community, the succeeding boards
of managers have simply done the
best It could to keep It going.
There Is another side to this story,
and that Is tho reason why the com
mercial Interests of this city have
withheld lis support. It Is cWlmed,
and with some element of truth? that
the Commercial club has been Inact
ive and has regi iterated Into a purely
athletic club.
To understand this thoroughly, the
La Orande Cummerclnl club was
formed out of the old Lit Orande Ath
letic club, and for several years the
combination of athletics and business
worked In harmony, and 'wns success
ful, but by degrees Interest lagged In
both ..departments t the extent that
the athletically Inclined members
withdrew Its support and those who
represented the commercial Interests,
likewise. The present status Is the result.
Lackff loyalty to the dub by citi
zens may permit Its burial, and they
will not miss the advantages until It
is too Into. The club building has' al
ways provided a free place of meet
ings for large and small gatherings,
something which every city greatly
needs. There Is not a citizen In La
Orande but can take n visitor through
this building and comment with pride
thnt this splendidly appointed building
has been successfully maintained for
a number of years.
We can point with pride to the fact
' that there Is not another city In the
state of Oregon that has maintained
such an institution for the .length of
time that the La Orande Commercial
club has been maintained. This or
ganization has a reputation through
out the state that Is valuable.
. VT all know those things. We also
know its faults. The thing to do la

I'TLTOX'S REPLY.
A careful leading of the reply of
Senator Fulton ' cannot but create a
feeling that he Is far from being a
sinner, and as one pursues the lengthy
article, long before the close it cer
tainly will convince the Impartial
reader that he Is made the. victim of
a political conspiracy and Governor
Chamberlain is not adding greatly to
light. If the governor knew, and he
says that, he did, that Smith took this
money, then Smith was not the propjr
person to receive the recognition of an
appointment. Chamberlain Is a
shrewd politician and knowing that
he Is to be a candidate for United
States senator, that to win he must
kill off Senator Fulton. He may be
successful, for the public mind Is in
that state of frenzy that too many
consider a charge, a conviction, but
If the honest Voters of this state will
cartfully analyze the fight that Is now
being waged against Fulton, they will
soon find that much of It Is cheap
politics and unworthy of the men who
are at the bottom of it. If It Is not
politics, why does Mr. Heney say that
he has more to follow T If Mr. Heney
has nothing more than a lot of ancient
history which he has so far presented,
he knows his case Is weak and to
bolster It up, says that If this is not
enough he still has another Jolt up his
sleeve. If he Is the man that we have
all been led to believe he Is, why, In
this instance, does he not present his
case complete to the Jury of voters
and let them decide upon the merits.
If Senator Fulton will return to Ore
gon und go on the platform and deny
these charges as he did In his letter,
and no more damaging evidence thun
has so far been presented comes out
ugalnst him, he will enlist the sympa
thy of thousands of heretofore luke
warm supporters and he will carry
the primaries IIUh a whirlwind.
There should he a representative at
tendance at the meeting of the repub
lican central committee, which will
bo held In this city Tuesday, March
3. The call not only Invites the com
mitteemen to nttend, but Is extended
to representative republicans through
out the county.
What Is the matter with reviving
the republican club of this city? It
has rested so long a little exercise
might do It, as well as the party,
some good.
It should not ho many hours, If
these rain continue In the mountains,
before, ne can roach up and turn on
tho light. '
