Spokane, Wash., Feb. 21. Hon. M.
McKenzte of MasI,eod, a member of
the provincial government of Alberta,
Is in Spokane to arrange with the
chamber of commerce to run an In
land empire excursion to the various
cities and towns in that province dur
ing the grain harvesting season next
summer, after which the commercial
bodies of Alberta purpose visiting Spo
kane and points In the territory trib
utary to it, in which the value of
mining, lumber, grain, fruit and live'
stock products, exclusive of manufac
tures and imports, aggregated $133
500,000 in 1907, or $2S7 per capita of
a population of 500,000.
"My purpose In presenting this pro
ject at this time is to . bring into
closer affiliation and association the
business men and producers of north
western Canada and the inland em
pire. Our Interests are mutual and
we have much in common; in fact, I
may say that the real development of
the boundary mining district was
made by Spokane capital and enter
prise. There are several men In Spo
kane who have become millionaires
as the result of their investments In
properties along the southern edge of
western Canada, and a number of our
people have amassed fortunes In your
timber, fruit and agricultural belts."
Mr. McKenzle will Immediately
make arrangements with the various
commercial organizations In the prov
ince of Alberta to Join in a formal In
vitation to the Spokane organization
to visit them some time the coming
summer.
F. E. Goodall, president, and L. G.
Monroe, secretary of the chamber of
commerce, who are now In southern
California with a party of 225 mer
chants and professional men, will take
up the matter on their return. Mr.
Monroe, who Is also secretary of the
Washington and Spokane County Hor
ticultural societies, will invite the
people of the province of Alberta to
Attend the Interstate apple show un
der the auspices of the Spokane coun
ty society the last week In January,
1909, which gives promlae of being
the most pretentious of Its kind ever
ltttmpted on this continent.
George B. Dresher, assistant secre.
tary of the chamber of commerce an
nounces that purses aggregating 110,
000 will be hung up in the competl
tions among apple growers In Wash
Ington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and
British Columbia, In addition to which
will be blue ribbons and trophies for.
exhibits from outside the state. Ex
pert horticulturists In the employ of
the government and the Washington
state college, will visit the orchards
In June to enlist the co-operation of
growers. The purpose Is to Interest
orchardlsts, not only In the northwest,
but throughout the country, to grow
better and clesner fruit, for which the
demand and prices were never better
than they are today.
