A Bid SAVIRd IN
CITY PUMP li PLAN
i
The Installation of the new city
pump and electrlo motor Is practically
completed, and as soon as the Grande
Konde Electrlo company resumes Its
' service, a great saving In the operation
ef the pumping plant will be perfect
ed. The council has a proposition
(from the electrlo company to furnish
It power for eight hours dally for
lift. 81 per month, or 12000 per year,
and If this Is not thought best, a con
tract on a meter system at so much
per 1000 gallons pumped. These de
tails Will be considered at the next
regular council meeting, to be held on
March 4, unless the weather moderates
and electric power Is furnished soon
er, when a special meeting of the
council may be called for this pur
pose. The city desires to make the
change at the earliest posslblo mo
ment. It Is costing the city now about
$8000 per annum for fuel. The new
pump has a capacity of 14,000 gallons
per hour, which In eight hours will
furnish 112,000 gallons. Those In
charge of the present pumping plant
estimate the capacity of the old pump
at, 8000 gallons per hour. In other
words, the new pump will dollver aa
much water In eight hours as tin
present plant In 14 hours. If eight
hours will furnish the required need
of the city, the saving under the now
system will be $3000 In the one Item
of fuel, and will practically pay fot
the new plant the first year of opera
tlaon. The new pump and electrli
motor cost a little more than 13100.
In laying aside the old steam pump
the clttzenB must not overlook Its lont
record of faithfulness. It has neve!
failed to do Its duty during Its It
years' service.
It seemed to realize Its responsibil
ity for every moment It censed to work
the safety of the city was In Jeopardy
but It never was out of service for s
sufficient length of time but what the
supply In the reservoir tided It over
It Is true. It does not throw tht
amount of water It once did, but It
can be set aside worthy of an Inscrip
tion. "'Well done, thou good anf
faithful servant."

CLOSED TIM
Because of a fire In the wooden
structure adjoining the Model res
taurant, late Saturday afternoon, John
Coffey, the barber, has been forced to
establish temporary quarter la the
rear of the Farmer & Trader Na
tional bank, and Proprietor Mox Bloch
has closed his dry good store pending
investigation by Insurance adjuster.
A defective flue In the Model res
taurant building I responsible for
the fire which Itself did but little
lamage, although It was the direct
?ause of a heavy loss to the Bloch es
tablishment, the stock being well sat
urated with water. It seems that the
iiue was cr'iieted around a Joist
of the wooden building adjoining, the
end of the timber forming a part ol
the flue. This condition existed foi
many year. Saturday, however, the
ond of the joist was Ignited and even
tually carried . the flame to the
woodwork of the one-story structure.
Then it was that the blaze was detect
ed. Application of water extinguished
he fire but drenched the men's fur
nishing goods. '1
Little damage was done to the bar
ker shop as Mr. Coffey had the fur
ilture and fixtures removed before
he water had soaked through the
-oof.
fThe Bloch store has been closed
pending visitation by the insurance
adjusters. The proprietor will not
'lazard a guess at the loss, but a cos
tal glance at conditions reveals tht
'act that but few articles remain un
'amaged. ,
The Model restaurant also suffered
There was little damage by fire, bu'
.vater ruined wall paper to a conslde'r
ble extent.
Department Receive Present.
Expressing his thanks for careful
ness displayed- by the department In
not committing any unnecessary dam
age with water and vandalism to fur
niture, J. A. Arbuckle, proprietor of
the Model restaurant, presented the
fire department with $10 today.
In making this gift, the restaurant
iroprletor compliments the depart
nent on Its care in not breaking and
imashlng furniture in Instances when
xtreme measures are not necessary
Oftentimes, fire departments break
ind throw away more goods and fur
ilture than they save by the applica
tion of water. This Is not the cast
vlth the La Grande department, how
ver, and he has expressed his appre
latlon as stated.
