noon, President Roosevelt received
the delegates to the fifth convention
of the Religious Educational assocla
tlon, and to a brief address highly
praised their efforts to Inculcate re
llglous and ethical Ideals Into the edu
cational system of the country. He
urged a union of patriotism and piety
In the training of the young. His
speech was greeted with applause by
the hundreds of distinguished clergy
men, educators and college presidents
and professors who attended the re
ception.
The morning session of the conven
tlon was principally devoted to a re
sume of the work of the association
during the last year by General Sec
retary Henry F. Cope of Chicago, and
Dean George Hodges of the Harvard
Episcopal Theological school. Among
those participating In the discussion
that followed were President William
H. P. Fltunce of Brown university,
President Samuel A. Eliot of the
American Unitarian association, Sec
retary Frank Knight Sanders of the
Congregational Sunday School society,
and President Charles Cuthbert Hall
of Union Theological seminary, New
York.
Department sessions will be held
this afternoon, following the White
House reception.
