S. K. Coio, Who Freighted Through
Tills Valley 33 Years Ago. .
S. K. Cole was an entertaining vis
itor at The Observer office this morn
ing. Mr. Cole freighted through this
city in the early seventies and as this
was his first visit within 35 years,
was naturally not prepared for the
great advances that have been made
during this period. He well remem
bers trading with W. J, Snodgrass
when he was in the merchandise bus
iness at Oro Dell and tells how, one
winter, that "Whispering Thompson,"
well known to the "early- freighters,
scooped the others. Most of the
freighters used two wagons that car
ried between 700O and 10,000 pounds
each, and during this soft, open win
ter, were spending a good portion of
their time getting their wagons out of
the mud holes. Thompson secured 12
lightweight horses and, Instead of us
ing two large wagons, distributed his
load Into four wagons. As a result he
walked right along through the moun
tains to the chagrin ft his fellow
freighters. Whispering Thompson was
never known to speak ' to his lead
guide ' horse In tones lower than a
whisper, but those whispers could be
heard for miles and miles.
Strayed.
There came to my place IV, miles
