While Not Claiming Ut Bet George

aloner Brown's AUuslon to His Pre
Electioa Statements Is Not In Fa
vor of the County Purchase of Road
. Making Machinery.
Cove, Ore., Feb. 11, 1108.
Editor Observer:
Please altow ma apace to answer
Mr. Brown's cantankerous letter. First
he defies me to show where the court
has misappropriated a dollar of the
county money. I think they spent
money wrongfully when they bought
that machine, and also when they
built that one-fourth mile of macad
am road, as one quarter mile a year
Is all they can build and make the
other improvements, and at that lick
it would take 20 years to build five
miles and of what benefit would that
be io the taxpayers of . Union county T
Besides, you wouldn't have run out of
your general road funds and have had
to draw on the district funds to help
you out so I think you spent -near
15,000 that could have been spent to
a better advantage In building bridges.
and I believe that IS per cent of the
taxpayers will bear me out In the
statement Next In regard to the two
salaries. I may have been a little
hasty, but I wilt explain: It has been
reported that the court laid out the
county roads In three districts and
each member of the board acts as
roadmaster of that district In place
of a. county roadmaster. This may
or may not be so. Mr. Brown can
explain.
Next, I was at the Harris bridge
when Mr. Campbell was at work on
it, but I never approved of the work
being done, neither did I disapprove
of lt. But, I asked Mr. Campbell If
It would be safe for me to cross my
engine after he was done. He said
"NO," and I hauled 40 acres of grain
a mile across the river to thresh' It.
.Next. I think $1300 Is a big differ
ence to pay between two machines of
the same size, built for the same pur
pose.
Next. He wants to know, why I
waited to file my kick on the' eve of
election. God bless you, Mr. Brown,
don't you know that we elect a coun
ty commissioner next June, and by
the Eternal Gods we want to make
our Improvement as the best Is none
too good!
Next, Mr. Brown said I am a dirty
political liar, and asks others not to
believe what I say Just before elec
tion. In reply I will say I am no
George Washington, and still I am no
stranger In Union county, and I be
lleve my word will bring as much' on
the market as Mr. Brown's. That kind
or language may help Mr. Brown's
feelings, but Jt wouldn't add any
friends to his list, and I know it will
not hurt me, and I am glad I don't
have to use such terms to express my
thoughts. And I further believe
have a right to ask the court questions
and receive a decent answer.
