FOREST SPARED
Washington, Feb. S. "Woodman,
spare that tree!" This warning, bear
ing the great seal and signature of
Uncle Bam and having behind It the
menace of the Big Stick, was promul
gated today by Chief Forester Glfford
Finchot. As a reBult, nearly 300 acres
of giant redwood forest on the south
ern slope of Mount Tamalpais, near
San Francisco, will be declared a na
tional monument, and the man with
the ax will be made to keep his dis
tance by the guardians appointed by
the government.
The forest, one of the few tracts of
giant redwoods now to be found In a
natural state In California, was do
nated to the government by William
Kent of Chicago. The Windy City
philanthropist paid (50,000 for the
tract some years ago, but the red
wood timber alone Is now valued at
over (125,000, so that the gift Is a
liberal one. The new "national mon
ument" will be known In the future
as Mulr Woods, In honor of John Mulr,
the distinguished naturalist. The
giant trees will now be given perma
nent protection, under virtue of the
law which provides that objects of
scientific Interest may be declared
national monuments. The govern
ment grove will be a pleasure ground
for the people of San Francisco, Oak
land and other cities In the vicinity,
aa well as an object of scientific Inter
est to visitors from all parts of the
world.
The chief reason for the permanent
protection of the land by the govern
ment Is that there Is no other redwood
grove In the world more accessible to
bo many people. The canyon Is In
absolutely primeval condition, not so
much a scratched by the hands of
man. It lies within an rpnur's ride of
Sun Francisco, nt the very doors of
hundreds of thousands of people.
So long as the land remains In pri
vate ownership, there Is always dan
ger mat me trees will tie attacked,
an I Mr. Kent feared this, but as a na
tional monument they will bo safe.
There are, of course, many finer
stands of redwood In California, but
no typical groves are owned bv the
lotted Suites, nor are tin re any which
inlirht be ac.(ulr. d by the govern-

LiHUlJf INHERITANCE
OF DISEASE AND SUFFERING ,
No truth is more forcibly manifested in physical life than the ojJd saying
like begets like ;" for just as the offspring of healthy ancestry are blesseti
with pure, rich blood, insuring health and strength, so the children of blood
tainted parentage inherit a polluted circulation to burden their existence
with disease and suffering. Swollen glands about the neck, brittle bones,
weak eyes, pale, waxy complexions, running sores and ulcers and general
poor health, are the usual ways in which Scrofula is manifested. In some
cases the blood is so filled with the scrofulous germs and tubercular niattet
tb-t from birth life is made miserable with suffering. Others who inherit
the disease succeed in holding the trouble in check during young, vigorous
life, but when the system has begun to weaken and lose its natural vitality,
and especially after a spell of sickness, the ravages of the disease will com
mence, and in a great many cases terminate in Consumption. S. S. S. is tnd
very best treatment for Scrofula. It renovates the entire circulation anrl'
drives out the scrofulous and luberculat
deposits. S. S. S. is the greatest of all blood
purifiers, and it not only goes to the very
txvttom of the trouble and removes the cause
and cures the disease, but it supplies the
weak, anaemic blood with the healthful 1
properties it is in need of, S. S. S. is made ,
entirelv of healine, cleansing roots, herbs,
and bnrks, and i an Absolutely safe remedy for young or old. Book on;
