un6SY CLOSING f AVORED
WHEREVER 11 IS TRIED
In a front-page story the Spokesman-Review
gives the opinion of
three of the leading newspaper men
ef the north went on the subject of
Sunday cloning, follows:
Three of tbe moat widely known
newspaper nutn of the Pacific north
west, representing the three leading
north coast cities, eulogized the 8un
day cloning of saloons, - the eulogies
being made after. experience with the
non-Sunday aaloon in their home
eltles.
The gentlemen referred to are 8. A.
Perkins, owner and publisher of the
Tacnma Ledger; C. 8.' Jackson, pub-
Seattle.
Speaking of conditions In Portland
where the closed saloon on Sunday
has been thoroughly, tried out, Mr.
Jackson said:
Portland Llkca Clotted Saloon.
"Tbe general feeling In Portland
anent the closed saloon on Sunday Is
that closing Is for the best Interests
and were the matter of an open or i
closed saloon on Sunday to be brought
to a vote I would be surprised if the
saloon men themselves were to vote
for the return of the open saloon.
"Under the old rule of the open sa
loon crime In Portland was far more
nrevalent than now. And th ncvim.

years I suffered with catarrh of .the
stomach, and for the past year I waa

this to my Btoniach trouble, aa my cir
culation was very poor. What food I
ale would turn to gas almost at once.
1 would have a sensation of bloating1,
and would have to belch frequently
to relieve this. My heart also became
affecteu, and I would suddenly become
dizzy aud have palpi tatioua. I wa9
tired and dull and despondent at all
times. I lost a great deal of flesh, and
was nervous and depressed. This went
on for over seven years, although I
spent hundreds of dollars tryinz to
get relief. ,
"When Cooper was in Boston, i
heard a good deal about his ldc on

friends told me thut his rafedlclnes had
greatly helped then. - I purchased
some of the Nej Discovery medicine.

haa not resulted in general enforce

'"In Portland the saloons close
every morning at 1 o'clock. Sunday
Included. That hour gives theater
parties and late diners ample time to

dates the ' restaurants and restaurant
patrons accordingly.'.' , : ,
Mr. Weston,- of the Seattle P.-I.
said that the Sunday closing of sa
loons had been in vogue in that city
for a year, and every one was pleased
with the outcome. Since the cloaing
the police recorda have shown a
marked Improvement, there being far
less crime and disorderly conduct
than before the new rule went Into effect.
Speaking as to the result In Taco-
ma, Mr. Perkins of the Ledger, said:
Cloning bt GimmI for Twoma.
"I am in favor of the closing of sa
loons on Hunday. I believe It Is a
good thing 'for the community; for the
working class and for the people In
general.
"We have beep working as a closed
town on HundayS for some time, and
If the matter of opening or closing
were now put iu a ma ui t',lt pvc;
inn cornea saioon would carry over
whelmingly; and I believe the time is
.ast coming when the saloon men
themselves are recognizing that it Is
for their best interests as well as the
public; and when they obey the laws
on the statute books they dignify
their own lives and their business
thny are legitimatizing their busin.ss.
The saloon business when conducted
along lines of the law, order and de
cency Is Just as legitimate as the green
grocer's business: and the liquor in
terests are finding that It Is to their
Interests to obey the law and to run
their places In an orderly manner.
"I do not believe It is for the best
Interest to close everybody and every
thing on Sunday; but I think It is for
the best Interests of the people to
Hose the saloon on Sunday."

AT KAMELA
A pleasing bit of news to La
Grande business men Is the announce
ment of the Pacific Express com
pany, that an office Is to be opened
at Kamela on February 1. N. Seeman
is to be the new agent.
Absence of - an office at the rail
road town has been cause of much
trouble to local merchants who have
occasion to ship suppliea and provis
ions to the summit. Unless parties
were there to receive it on arrival, ex
press matter was transported at great
risk.
Commencing with the first of next
month, however, there will be no more
trouble on1 this score.
Office at Pilot Rook.
On the date on which the Kamela
office becomes established, the Pa
cific Express company will establish
a new offlce"at Pilot Rock.
Seven Remarkable Senators.
Wuaiiiufciuu, Jr. 9. last
row of seats on the democratic side
of the senate chamber sit seven men
who are, In many ways, the mont re
markable who ever wore a t ga.
There is Gore of Oklahoma, the first
totally blind senator, and his col
league, Cv.en, Oescemlant of Chero
kee Indian chiefs. There is the
youngest senator, Bryan of Florida,
ind the oldest, Whyte of Maryalnd,
rtith a half century between them, al
though they sit side by side. There
Is "Fiddling Bob" Taylor of Tennes
see, who fiddled his way Into the
senute, and Bankhead of Alabama,
who ran for the house and landed In
lis present august position. Last,
but not least among that Illustrious
seven, Is Jefferson Davis of Arkan
sas, sworn foe of the "plutes" and
the democratic Demosthenes of the
most maligned state of the union.
Tuft Men After Wisconsin.
Milwaukee, Wis., Jan. 29. Sup
porter.? of Secretary Taft today began
circulating petitions In every district
of Wisconsin and also for delegates
at large, In the hope of capturing the
state's delegation to the republican
national convention, despite the am
bitions of Senator La Follette. Ut:;Vr
the primary law, no definite nr. n
could be taken until today, hut tne
Taft men will henceforth carry on the
fight with vigor. Sonie districts, the
Taft supporters admit, will nrobablv
be for La Follette, but the adherents
of Roosevelt's candidate believe they
can show that Wisconsin does not
stand unanimously for the radical
Ideus of its famous senator.
