"STARCn BALL" THE LATEST.
Pitcher Manuel Working on Curve to
Relegate the "Spittcr."
"Moxle" Manuel', the Southern
league recruit for the Chicago White
Sox, has received his contract from
President Comlskey and expects to
answer to the call for the first prac
tice. Manuel was a star In southern
company last year. He Is practicing
a new curve which he expects to
launch on American league hitters.
He uses It with the aid of starch
mixed with saliva. Manuel's experi
ence with the starch shows that it Is
an Improvement on the ordinary
"spltters." Manuel says it Is possible
to pitch the "starch ball" with mrfre
of a quick dart than a curve. He ex
pects to perfect It with the aid of
Ed Walsh, and says that they have
talked of It on former occasions and
agree it will eventually succeed the
ordinary "spit ball." Memphis Ap.
