Washington. Jan. 27. Fifty-eight
years ago today in London, Samuel
Gompers, president of the American
Federation of Labor, first saw the
light of day. As the head of the
greatest organization of worklngmen
in the world, he Is now an Interna
tional figure, and the reclpent of con
gratulations, not only from other la
bor leaders, but from men high In
the world of commerce, literature and
government. Recent attacks made
upon his character and methods have
served only to augment the respect In
which he Is held by millions of his
fellow, citizens.
Gompers was born In London Jan
uary 27, 1850. the son of a cigar-
maker. He attended school for four
years, and this was the extent of his
formal education, with the exception
of a few terms at a night school
while working In his father' cigar
shop.
At the age of 13 Gompers came to
America, settled In New Tork city,
and In Urn became a naturalized citi
zen of the United States. When only
I lad of 14 Gompers began his career
is a' labor leader by aiding In the or
ganization of the Clgarmakers' Inter
national union, of which he later be
came secretary and president. In 1881
le was the pioneer In the organiza
tion of the American Federation of
Labor, and ha been It executive
head since that time, with the excep-
lon of two year.
The great labor leader Is a man of
(cholarly. refined taste, and hi ap
pearance la that of a college president
ather than a labor leader. He Is a
ihort. buncy, stout man with a big
bead set on square shoulder. His
expressive face bespeak Intellect, de
termination and a wide charity. 3e
s a constant smoker, ana ps'ifs 1. 1
cigars In the energetic way that marks
ill his actions. He is a member of ru
:hurch or religious organization, al
though in New Tork he was a regu
lar attendant at the meetings of Dr.
Felix Adler's Ethical Culture society.
The bulky form of Gompers is fre-
If. ntly to be s-nn at the cnpltol dur
In? the sessions of congress. He
watches closely all labor legislation
and frequently appears before con
gressional committees to arjj'ie the
cause of orgsnln-d labor. In '."ii re.
Intlon 'to bills affecting the
of workers. Laboring men through
tlvities and probably wttl continue to
do so for many years' to coma, since
President Gompers, at the threshold
of his 59th year, retains to a wonder
ful extent all the mental and physi
cal vigor of a man 0 year younger.
When did you come from, baby dear!
Out of the everywhere into the acre.
WhT did you net vour ey so blue t '
Out ot the sky t cuue throngh.

Where did you get that tittle turr

The fact is as sad as it is true that the
baby fimis the tear waiting to dull it
blue eyes, and stain its soft cheeks. At
the hrst it " has no language hut a cry."
It one necessity is but to give expres
sion to its suffering, and for that a tear
suffices. 1
The mother who stoops in anguish
over tile wailing child would do any
thing to ease its suffering. But she is
help less. The time when she could have
done so much for her child is past. She
did not realize that in those anxious
nervous days when she shrank from the
ordeal of motherhood she was preparing
suffering for the baby.
The path of motherhood is soothed
and muile easy lor those who use Dr.
Pierce's Favorite Prescription. It ives
nbvsical buovnncv and mental bright
ness. It traihiuilizes the nerves, en
( courages a htaliuy appetite and induces
reiresiiing sleep, it gives me motnet
strength for her hour of trial, and the
confidence and content which come
from strength. It makes the birth hour
practically painless, and by increasing
the natural, food secretions, it enables the
uealtliv mother to enjoy the happiness
of nursing her child.
" Kavoritr . Prescription " contains no
alcohol, noi tiler opium, cocaiue, or any
other narcotic.
